Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone has made an ice cream cake and then decorated it? I was wondering if it is not a good idea, as the ice cream would probably start melting while I was decorating it? I"m a beginner so it would take me awhile to decorate it!

In one of the latest Wilton yearbooks they've made a tiered cake with ice cream. It's not decorated very much but it does look neat...its layers of cake with scoops of ice cream on each tier and then a swirl of whip cream and a cherry on top!

I think it would work but you'd probably have to work fast!! icon_cool.gif

Give it a go and let us know!!

I have decorated an ice cream cake before. You have to get the ice cream soft and then put into the pan and frozen hard (my upright freezer freezes much harder than the side of my fridge).

First you assemble the cake and frost the outside. Refreeze and then take it out and add decorations and then freeze again. Whipped cream frosting is particularly good on an ice cream cake.

I'm not sure if this is the one isakov1 is talking about but I got it off the Wilton site. I've wanted to try this one...it looks really yummy!

I think it would work if you decorated it a little at a time. Maybe do a little here and there and keep freezing it for a while in between. Might take a little time but I think it would work.

I did an ice cream cake for a friend's birthday last summer. The problems that i ran into were the icing. I used fresh whipped cream and it never dawned on me that you could put piping gel in your icing to make it decoratable using your tips and such.

So when I got finished making the icing it not only with stood the heat for a 30 minute drive. It looked really good when I got finished with it. But like someone has all ready said. You kind of have to decorate it a little bit at a time.

The picture is in my photo gallery the yellowish orange sponge bob cake. Just make sure that you keep everything really really cold. And you shouldn't run into any problems.
