I'm thinking about buying this book, I've flipped through it at Borders and it looks nice. I was wondering what everybody else thought of it.

Any opinions? How are the recipes? What did you like best about it? Least?

Is it worth the $35 that Borders is asking?

I got it several years ago and I love it. I used some of her recipes as springboards for my own and I loved the weight tables in the back (grams and oz). It really helped me when I was converting all my formulas. I think it's a great reference tool.

As to price- you might want to check out either Jessica's Bisquit or even overstock.com to see what they're selling it for before you purchase from Borders.

*This is totally unrelated, but I wanted to ask you if you've ever used maple sugar in your baking and if so, is the flavor fairly strong or is it subtle?)

I check out books from the library to decide if they are worth buying. The Cake Bible is one of the few I've bought. She gives more explanation about baking than the average person would ever want to know. She has some great recipes and gives in-depth instructions on how to make wedding cakes. She also gives clear instructions on how to make real frostings, fillings and ganache. As a newbie baker, the book is an invaluable resource for me.

I am thrifty so I requested the book as a gift. icon_smile.gif

I have this book also. I haven't used any of the recipes yet, but plan to in the near future. I ordered mine from Amazon. It was much cheaper than the local bookstore and took only about a week to arrive. I just ordered the Cake Mix Doctor books and Whimsical Bakehouse book from Amazon also. I can't wait for them to arrive.

I received this book as a gift for my birthday a few months ago - and it is the best book I have ever received!

I think you shoud definately get it, but maybe check around before getting it at Borders for that price - Amazon.com has it for $23.

Good luck!

Snowboarder:

I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I've never actually used maple syrup or sugar in my baking. It is just too expensive, and I'm on a very limited income.

I've used it in fudge, and it tasted very strongly, but that was the intended purpose.

I do have a cake recipe that uses maple syrup as its only sweetener, and I hear it's good. But I haven't tried it yet.

It is for sure. icon_surprised.gif I was just wondering how maple-y it was. I don't use extracts and was thinking of trying it in an icing for maple flavor.

I usually find the book I want at Border's then buy it online for a lot less. You can usually get the books at Amazon shipped for free if you spend $25 or more, unless you buy from another store or individual through Amazon.
I've heard good things about this book, but have never looked through it. I'm sure it would be good to have, but wouldn't spend that much. See if you can find a deal online. : )

Definately check out Amazon.com. I just bought The Whimsical Bakehouse AND Colette Peters' Cakes to Dream On, BOTH for $38.94, shipping free for over $25.00 orders. Can't beat that with a stick! icon_smile.gif

Crisseyann, that's a deal! I got this book from the library although I did have it on my Christmas list (didn't get it, no time to order it). It's great!

Anyone have a favorite buttercream recipe from this book? I tried the Neoclassic and it's smooth but is just like sweetened butter and not to my liking. I don't want one that is so sweet and alot of Crisco but one that is too much butter is no good either. Can't find one!

Zamode, have you tried adding heavy cream to the pwd sugar buttercream and using no or very little crisco? Also, use vanilla sparingly as it just intensifies the super sweet taste.

My family loves the classic buttercream. It taste more like cake batter or pudding, than butter to me. Did you add alcohol to your buttercream?

Many love IMBC. For some reason RLB calls this Mousseline buttercream. icon_rolleyes.gif It is lighter since it's made with egg whites. I like it, but prefer the richness of the egg yolk buttercream.
