Teddy Bear Cake - The Fondant Melted!

I made a teddy bear cake using Wilton's stand up bear pan, for my nephews 1st birthday. I put a little blue fondant t-shirt on him Friday night, and then Saturday morning I planned on piping the "fur" on him. Well, Saturday morning the shirt was laying at the feet of the bear cake and it was all slimy and there was blue slime all over the bear! What would have caused this? These are some of my theories, I had too much shortening on the fondant, I didn't ice the cake under the fondant, I wrapped the bear in saran wrap after the shirt was on so that the cake didn't get stale. Could any of these been my problem?
I redid the shirt the next morning and the bear turned out so cute! I'll post pictures later. But...on the drive over to my future sister-in-laws house, my fiance slammed on the brakes and my bear tipped over Only the back was ruined thank God, but I was still almost in tears.
Was the cake completely cool before you put the fondant on? You didn't put anything under the fondant to help it adhere?
I can't help you out with the fondant questions, but when I do the stand up bear, I put him (or her, we must be politically correct!) on a 2" styrofoam circle that has been covered with cake foil, and then I take a sharpened wooden dowel rod an impale the bear with it, sticking it into the styrofoam. It seems so cruel, but it will get it there without tipping over!
Yes the cake was completely cool. And no,I tried to skip a step and not ice the cake underneath the fondant. Is that why it got slimy and fell off?
It may of got moist from the cake inself. I usually put a thin layer of BC under the fondant.
When I transport any of my 3D bears etc...I dowell them behind the ears in to the board.
He sounds really cute. You will have to post him!
