if you're looking for free hosting, you'll have to live with pop-ups or banners or some sort of advertising on your site (that's how they can offer it "free")

if you pay a monthly charge for your site (this is different than the annual fee to register your domain name) you shouldn't have any advertising (except your own!!) I signed up with google & chapters and added their advertising to my site (you get a little kickback from these if people use the links &/or buy something which can help pay for your site) but I'll probably take them off when I re-write my site.

I made a free website last week from Freewebs.com. I'd like to do more with it and I may upgrade and become a paid subscriber but for now it showcases my cakes so people at least have something to see.

I have webshots, it's free. You do have to live with advertising. You can pay a monthly fee to get rid of the advertising. You get a weekly report about how many times your pictures have been looked at.
