Stefy, your comment was incredibly rude. You are right to say that people have their own opinions, but it is not right to make a personal attack on the author of this post by telling her to "get over yourself". I don't think she has to get over herself; she is just expressing that she feels puzzled and hurt about it. That's called human.

I, of all people, know that individual taste differs. Just ask Chixbaby27. It wasn't so much her opinion as the naive and blatant way she stated that my cakes just didn't equal Wal-Mart's. There are more discreet and genteel ways of saying things.

I know you guys don't know my office staff but if you did it would make explaining this easier. You'd just have to know this girl. As it is, I appreciate all the comments, though not so much being told to get over myself. Again, there are better ways to put things.

I think that, as usual, money is the root of all evil. Once you start giving free cakes or giving a discount, it is hard to start charging full price. I had a good friend order a cake for her boyfriend's birthday. When I asked about a small 1 cake mix cake, she insisted on a huge sheet cake. I tried to tell her that it wouldn't be eaten as she was having an outdoor cookout and everyone there was going to be drinking beer, etc. It is my experience that usually dessert is the last thing on their minds when they're hitting the beer cooler. Anyway, I made the big cake with a "Porky Pig" face I drew on top and filled in with stars (her boyfriend's nickname is Porky). Was really quite cute and took alot of time. I charged her $20 which covered my ingredients and no where near covered my labor. She looked a little shocked at the price. After the cookout she had about 3/4 of the cake left so she really acted offended at the price I charged. Duh! Go figure!

I bake alot and live alone so I am always giving homemade bread and cake and cookies away so I think people expect me to do these things for free all the time. If they want to order a cake for a special occassion, I usually send them to my daughter who is not bashful about charging what they are worth.

As for office ethics..........women tend to not want to acknowledge each other's assets and talents. Don't get defensive on me girls.........I don't mean us here on CC.

As for "Walmart" type cakes, it's like living in what I call "cookie cutter" houses in a project where all the houses are just alike. Guess if we all liked the same kind of cake, we'd be a pretty boring bunch. Just sit back and know deep inside that our cakes are much better!!!!!!! thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

Kos, I wouldn't call it mud slinging. I just think that people need to remember that this forum is meant for us to be helpful, not to be rude or demeaning to others by hurtful comments in these posts. It infuriates me, and I am not going to sit by passively and not address when it happens.

Ok...get back on topic, focus and be nice to each other...or I shall run "virtually naked" thru this thread. Mind you, it would damage computer screens and cause most of you to fall to the floor screaming "My eyes!"
If you wouldnt want something said to you, dont say it to others.

I for one, would love to see that Dale! LOL!

When I first joined CC, I rarely ever saw a thread like this!!! Now they're almost daily!! icon_sad.gif

Honestly, if you disagree with a post, just leave it be. We're cake decorators, not politicians! I've bitten my tongue several times, believe me. If I see a post I disagree with, or something that I feel I need to respond to, I type my reply, and then delete it before I post. I at least get it out that way, but no one has to see me be a meany head!

Come on y'all! BIG CC GROUP HUG NOW!!!

I just think its a little hypocritical for you to slam someone about making comments in regards to your cake when you're so opinionated about others as well. Some people like the taste of "Wal-Mart" type cakes - that's ok BUT to say they have poor taste is just as rude as what your co-worker said

Not trying to fan the fire, but the in the original post the statement was made "she made it so obvious that her taste is atrocious". I find that statement to be very insulting and leaning toward being a bit snobbish. I think we have to be able to keep things in perspective and if you can sling out the insults you better be prepared to take them as well.

I don't want to butt in here, but the goodcakefairy is about to put all of you in a time-out.

Look, we don't come to CakeCentral to argue and snipe. We come here to talk to people who enjoy cake decorating and to offer each other support. This kind of crud is what chases people off of boards. Is slowly choking the life out of this site is worth being right?

CUT IT OUT

I completely agree, Ellepal, but I think saying has someone has atrocious taste, is a personal attack, just because someone does not like your product does not mean they have bad taste, they have different taste.

I agree Megan, but we have all said things we don't really mean when we're angry. She came her looking for support when she was hurt, and its not our business to personally attack her. She actually didn't PERSONALLY attack anyone her with that statement. I actually like store bought cakes as well (not as much as I like homemade though YUM) but I can eat store bought just fine, and I wasn't offended by her statement. I for one, am forever guilty of saying things I don't mean when my feelings are hurt. I think its a very natural occurance, in real life, and on the internet.

She didn't tell the lady that she had atrocious taste, she told us. Don't we all say things to sympathetic ears that we would never say to the person we're talking about?
She was just venting.

I don't know why I got caught up in this...

Sorry!

I am referring to the personal attack made against the author of this post where she was told to "get over herself." I found that comment to be so condescending and rude, that I am struggling to get over that. Those kinds of comments don't belong on CC. I personally apologize to everyone for not being able to let it go...I promise, I will, but it's shocking and I feel it's disrespectful, especially when we are supposed to be supportive of one another on here, not tear each other down.
Ok, I'll go into my zen place now, let it go, and try to imagine Dale running naked across a cake.
