I am going to try my hand at a tiered cake. I want to have an 8 in double layer round on a 10 in double layer square. Do I need supports and what should they be? I know this sounds like a stupid question. icon_redface.gif

I'd dowel underneath the 8" cake if you're stacking on top of one another... I tend to over dowel mine lol ... but put one in the center for sure to hold the weight of your cake... now me, I'd put one in the center, and 4 others at the edges of the cake to distribute the weight evenly (making a "T" or cross) and making sure the cake remained perfectly level .. but then, like I said, I over dowel stuff icon_biggrin.gif

Cheryl, I do the same thing, after all of that work I would feel awful if it fell. I don't call that over doweling, I call it a measure of precaution.

Should I use a cake round under the 8in cake or lay it directly over the cake with the dowels? Again, another silly question.

Put it on a cake board. Otherwise, the dowels would just sink into the 2nd cake. icon_smile.gif

And not a silly question...in fact, I asked the exact same one when I did my first tiered cake last year!
