Hi guys,
i am new around here and i would like some help. my friend wants me to make her wedding cake . i have had experience with making wedding cakes but this time i am out of my depth as my friend wants a cake with flowers from top to bottom . she wants sugar flowers on wire( i can make those ) but i am not sure how to fix them onto the cake without skicking the wires into the cake. she want a sort of swirling theme
Hi all I can say is do they have to be on wire I dont know what kind of look she will achieve from having them on wires, but it would make it a lot easier if they didnt have to be good luck if they do
Unfortunately, if your flowers are wired, the wires are used to attach it to the cake. You could trim the wires as short as possible and then make mounds of icing where each flower is to attach. Then you are more sticking it into the icing mound, but then it is possible people might notice the mounds behind the flower. Keep in mind that no one sees the cake without the flowers, so people won't think that the cake is full of holes or anything like that. It is also more important that the flowers don't fall off - the holes are no big deal.
I put my wired flowers into a plastic flower pick. Push the pick into the cake then fill with royal or fondant then arrange flowers in the pick. I do that on all my sprays with wire.
You can dip the wires into melted white chocolate, allow to set and then push them into the cake. You can insert a plastic drinking straw where you want the flowrs and then insert the wires into the straw. This way the wires never actually touch the cake. When you remove the straw it will have a plug of cake inside wher the wires were. Or you can use floral picks.
But unless my flowers are going to be on the sides of cake where they need support I don't push the wires in anyway, I fold the taped wire stem under the flowers and just lay them on the top of the cake with a bit of buttercream piped underneath to hold them in place.
Shirley I am just teaching myself gumpaste flowers. Do you have any instruction on the consistency of the gumpaste it seems awfuly sticky sorry to ask right now but seen your post
