Hi guys...I had an idea for superbowl....cake balls shaped into mini footballs, covered in chocolate and piped with a little white royal icing for the stitches....
I'm going to make them tomorrow morning....
Great idea!! Thanks I've got lots of scraps in the freezer that I need to use up...DH & friends just better eat them all so I don't!
That IS a good idea but unfortunately I can't even get my cake balls to roll into balls, much less footballs!!! LOL! I have no idea what the problem is but I just can't get the consistency right for those darned things.
what are cakes balls? i have seen something about them before. is there a recipe mixture for them, using your left over cake pieces? jenn, how long do can you keep scraps in the freezer for? thanks in advance
i have to make a cake for a super bowl party tomorrow. i do not have the football pan so i was thinking about using the wonder mold and then cutting down the middle, laying it down sideways and butting the two flat fat ends together. yall think this would work for a football shape?
JJ, that would probably work well. Maybe it would help to use a dowel rod or two to make sure it stays together?

It definitely should. I have a wondermold from magic line(I think) instead of wilton, and the insert had several ideas to use the pan for, and that was one of them.
ok gina, thanks for the info. and also thank you dsouthern for the tip on using the dowl rods. i wouldnt of thought of that. you guys have a wonderful day!
How funny adven68,
We must think alike, I already made some. My friends are addicted to them so I have been finding creative ways to use them. I have also made a teddy bear and mice. Still working on perfecting it. I am throwing a baby shower at the end of the month and I will be making teddy bears out of cake balls and chocolate flowers and butterflies. I bought the magic chocolate book and it has inspired me to make everything out of chocolate. We will see how long that last.
Here is a pic of my first try at a teddy bear.
Forgot to add. I have made hearts out of cake balls. I was going to make a purse but ran out of time. I have gone cake ball crazy.
A really fun idea, footballs, hearts, teddies, but I have trouble just getting the ball shape, how do you get the mix to where you can mold it?
Another problem, nobody else ever gets to try them, I eat them way too fast! Janice
Janice,
I haven't had any problems shaping mine into balls. I use coffee creamer with mine. What kind of problems are you having? Is it just not sticking together. Is the problem while you are dipping in chocolate?
I freeze the "batter" for about an hour before I shape them. I also freeze them before dipping. I have had less mess this way.
Hi Talmas, the last batch I had about 4 cups of the cake pieces (lots of trimmings from the guitar cake)put them in my KA mixer with the paddle, added a couple of tablespoons PS, 3/4 cup small pecan pieces, and 3/4 cup amaretto syrup (pretty thin). The mixture was easily made into balls, but was messy (I can see where putting it in the freezer for a while would help). The balls were solid enough that I didn't have any problem with the dipping. Any suggestions? Janice
Those are really cute, Talmas, and I like the Teddy too! I probably did add too much liquid, as soon as I bake again and have scraps I'll give it another try!
I see you have some neat tools for dipping, I was just using a regular fork, so I was getting major pools under the balls. They sure tasted good though! Thanks! Janice
Talmas....great job....I'm sure they went over well...
I never had a chance to make them but hearts for V-day is a great idea!
OK...how about this....
Mix all the ingredients for cake balls, as you like them. Line a pan with parchment paper and mold the mixture into the pan. Freeze it for a while and when you remove it from the pan you can coat it with ganache. I'm drooling just thinking about it. It will be like a fudge or truffle cake and you don't have to spend time balling the dough.
