I am looking into taking the cake decorating classes at hobby lobby. I love looking at all the beautiful cakes people make and I was hoping someone could give me some pointers on how to get started. Thanks in advance Jackie

Hi Jackie -- welcome to Cake Central!!

Best advice I can offer you is to have lots of fun!! I took my first Wilton Course 3 years ago and have been having a bunch of fun ever since!!

When you sign up for your course, on the first night of class you will receive a course book. Bring a pen and paper to take notes. The first class is all demo by the intructor. Purchase the Course 1 Student kit and you'll be fine!!

If you have more specific questions, let us know and maybe we can guide you further!

Jay

Hey, Brians Baker ...

I REALLY hate to admit this ....

Finally928 means .... after 13 years of friendship, a guy I know and I "FINALLY" started dating on "928" - September 28th of 2004.

Sadly -- the relationship is no more and I would LOVE to change my sign in name because it is sort of embarassing and holds ambiguous feelings for me now.

To back up what you said ..... I actually decorated on my own for 2 years before i took the classes. Took Courses 1 and 2 back to back and then took over 2 1/2 years before I took Course 3. MUCH of what I have learned and incorporated into my cakes *(frozen buttercream transfers, run in sugar, marshmallow fondant)* I have learned on this site and others!!

Essentially -- this hobby can be lots of fun! Just remember, its just cake!!

I have been dabbling in decorating with buttercream, fondant and colorflow for the last couple years. I am not taking Course I and learning lots of tricks and shortcuts. I have never been very good at decorating with tips and bags, and this class is teaching some basics that are very helpful. I much prefer to decorate using fondant, but it sure helps to know the basics! GOOD LUCK!

I took a four-night course almost a year ago. It was a good basis for getting started, and I'm glad I took it. I have learned much of what I do by reading on the internet and in cake books. A good way to buy supplies is by waiting until Hobby Lobby puts their Wilton stuff on sale for 40% off. Or they put a coupon in the paper or internet almost weekly for one item at 40% off.
