I may be wrong, but I think you'd go bankrupt trying this on any large scale. icon_eek.gif 2 grams of the stuff will run you no less than $3 and I don't think it would do much to a large amount of buttercream.

You can "paint" on crusted buttercream in the same way you'd paint fondant: luster dust mixed with lemon extract. You need to use a light touch so that you don't get grooves, but it can be done.

I agree with BlakesCakes - painting the crusted buttercream is the way to go!

I was thinking on a smaller scale like for flowers or dots. My painting never comes out very well, and I was trying to save a step and time if I could.

Here's the CC recipe for piping in silver & gold. I haven't tried this, but one suggestion would be to make a small amount of this (the full recipe
calls for 2 tsp. of luster dust and that would be at least an entire pot--$$$$) and add it to a cup of full strength buttercream. I see no reason why that wouldn't pipe just fine. I don't know if you could do things like roses, that you would have to lift off and store, because the piping gel might make them too soft. You might even want to try it first without the piping gel to see how the consistency is.

Piping silver and gold

2 ts. Powdered sugar
2 ts. gold silver or metallic dusting powder
clear alcohol
1 ts. piping gel

On a small ceramic plate mix sugar and dusting powder. Add a few drops of clear alcohol or lemon extract and mix with a small palette knife to create a stiff paste

Add the piping gel, a little at a time, mixing well until the consistency for piing in reached. Use a very small piping bag and tip as needed. The leftovers can be put into a small container and stored in the refrigerator. It will keep indefinitely

If you experiment, please let us know the results icon_wink.gif
