I'm making a baseball cake for my Grandpa for Saturday. The only cake pans I have are 2 - 9" rounds & a regular 13x9. So I feel pretty limited in what I can do. I thought about stacking the 2 9" rounds & then baking a cake in a mixing bowl & putting it on top, like a baseball. Will that be too heavy? Any other suggestions?

I wouldn't put it on the two rounds because of weight, but you could put it on the 9x13 and I would suggest using a cake plate and dowels depending on how heavy the "ball" is....

Hope this helps...

bowl cake on rounds will work IF you treat it like a tiered cake and put the bowl cake on a cakeboard and then put support dowels in the rounds to hold up the bowl cake.

Another idea is to just use your 9" rounds. Fill them with enough batter to get a nice top on both cakes. After the cakes have baked and cooled cut the tops off and put them to the side. after you stack your 2 rounds stack your "tops" on top. This will give you a pretty decent round top. Then just shave away at the sides to give the all around "ball" look. Also shave some away at the bottom. I do it this way all the time. If you look in my pics, that's how the basketball cake was done.

Good luck!

I've never used cake boards or dowels before. Is that something that Walmart would have?

Attached are a few Bball cakes I have done. Another, on is a hockey, cake with a jersey. If he has a favorite team you could use the Bball picture I am sending you with the sports jersey draped over it like the hockey cake.

What do you think about this?
10" round, then 8" round, then small baseball on top?

warning...

all the stores in my area have been remodeled to REMOVE the fabric dept. There's only one store left that has fabric and they were told their dept. would be gone w/in two months.

in speaking w/ the ladies who work there and at a brand new store that was built w/out a fabric dept. -- this is the NEW corporate policy. they will sell sewing notions, but not fabric. --- and they are completely rearranging the store layouts to create a "party" section which is where the wilton stuff will be!

call WalMart and complain-- WE WANT OUR FABRIC BACK!
