I am asking to maybe save others from making the same mistake! My worst one was some store brand vanilla extract--the real thing not not the artificial stuff. I made some sugar cookies and they had a harsh metalic taste so I tried again and noticed the strange smell from the vanilla bottle. I threw it out. Also Wilton's fondant and ready to use icing rank up there.

Wilton fondant. Hands down. But you know, for hobby bakers, the people have a lock on the market because we can't just get the other stuff by running out at the last minute. It does mold like a dream though.

Have never bought Wilton fondant since I've heard so many bad things about it here.

The nastiest thing I've ever bought...Wilton clear vanilla and Wilton clear Almond. I didn't realize that they were not pure until after I used them. My icing had a terrible after taste and tasted incredibly artificial. I could not use the icing and threw it out along with the flavorings. NEVER AGAIN!

What brand and where do you get your vanilla? I use wiltons and have really not had a problem with them but will try anything different.

Wilton fondant!

They have to know how bad this stuff tastes...you'd think.

I just feel bad that people eat this on cakes and then will never try fondant again.

I bought some filling in a sleeve once that was really nasty. I'm not sure what flavor--bavarian cream, maybe? I threw it out rather than use it in my cake.

Wilton fondant. thumbsdown.gif

I just switched to Satin Ice and it works better and tastes good.

You'd think Wilton would work to improve the flavor.

the nastiest thing that i bought would have to be Wiltons Fondant, it has a really bad tate. as a reply to hollypj wilton does know how bad the product is but what they tell the instructors is why would they change the taste when they sell so much of it. the only way to get them to change the product is to call them and stop buying their fondant

Poor Wilton lol, I have to agree with the Wilton fondant though. I do like to use it for modeling since its cheap & comes in colors. But I only use it for things that won't be eaten.

You'd think they would, but yet they don't! They don't have to, because people still buy it. It helps that in many areas it's the only fondant that's readily available. I have to buy my fondant mail order or make it. I refuse to cover a cake in Wilton, no matter how desperate I am!

They would sell even more, though, if they changed their recipe. I would be thrilled if I could just pop into my local Michael's when I needed some fondant!

Have any of you tried their ready-made gumpaste? I tried it for the first time last fall and it was surprisingly nice to work with! I've used their gumpaste mix in the past, and wasn't happy with it. It's nice that they offer an alternative now.

That is such an arogant attitude! You'd think that they'd want to take pride in their product. I think in time that they will see their market share drop as more and more decorators become aware of other options.

It probably won't happen soon enough, though!

Is it really that cheap, though? At my Michael's it's about $5/pound. I ordered FondX and got it for about $4/pound, including shipping.

I guess if you use discount coupons, it would be cheaper...

i recently took the wilton gum paste cource and one of the classmates would not use wilton fondant, she would make her own. the kind that she would make tasted great, no nasty aftertaste. she gave every one in class the recipe and it was simple to make and you can add what ever clear flavouring you wanted.

that's interesting. I wonder if others dislike the vanilla. Last year, I made up some sweetened milk and put equal amounts of several different vanillas into it to decide which one I wanted to go with permanently. And the Wilton clear vanilla won! Maybe there's something wrong with my taster????? That's scary!

Unanimously the group cries... "Wilton Fondant!". There should be a law against putting anything that tastes like Elmer's glue on your cake!!

Also, a sleeve of raspberry filling from a local restaurant supply store! (Thank GOD I tasted it before filling the cake!) I ordered one from CK that should be here in a day or two and I'm anxious to try it. I need a really good rasp. filling recipe!

Some people like the taste of artificial vanilla and some don't. I wouldn't let it worry you!

I prefer the taste of real myself. It isn't clear, but I don't care if my icing has a slight ivory hue. Or I just correct the color with a little violet food color.

I buy real vanilla at Costco in big bottles. It's cheaper than Wilton.
