I have used a 9 or 10 inch round and just removed about 3 inches from the center of the cake. Then slide both halves together to make a football shape.

Well, according to this site, a two layer 9 inch cake feeds 32. I've only made a one layer football cake. Plus with the slice cut out of the center, that brings it down a bit smaller. I would say it could feed 12, pretty much like a character cake.
