I just made this little dog out of fondant as practice for a yorkie dog cake, here the "mug" is made out of fondant, but the real thing its going to be the cake (6 x 7") on top of a square 8" cake whith dogs paw prints on fondant, any pointers and advise are welcome! ahh...I will use a stylofoam ball to reduce the amount of fondant needed for the head and the weigth of the "dog".

I see what you mean about it looking kinda sad. I would sugest you raise the "eyebrows" a little, esp. in the middle/inside (does that make sense?). Also, if that doesn't quite do the trick, try to curve the "jowls" (?) up on the outside corners (sorry, I'm really bad at explaining this. please feel free to ask for clarification! lol). Also you might experiment with the eyes and which direction the little white specks point (pointing up like they are now, kinda makes me think the dog is "begging" and that always looks sad to me). Hope this helps! And it really looks amazing! You're doing a wonderful job!

I think painting would look great. I've never done that, but I imagine regular colors would work fine, but I sugest watering down paste colors with alcohol (I haven't done it, but I know it would help it evaporate quicker which might be important for the fondant). But if you do the painting I would definatly sugest a very fine brush and only do a few strokes widely spaced. I think the worst thing that could happen with painting is having too much and makeing it look clutered. Also I think making the "hair" lines/skoring a little deeper and more... "ragged" would help. Also, I'm sure you'll do this later with the placement on the paws, but having the head cocked to the side will help a ton with making the dog look happy. You really are doing a great job! I can't wait to see the finished cake!
