I have a wedding cake to do, which will be stacked, and the bride wants the layers decorated with ribbon on the bottom edges. Any suggestions for the best way of keeping the ribbon on the cake? By the way, I will be using buttercream icing.

I usually just use a stainless steel, pearl ended dressmakers pin. I just inform the customer of how many there are in the cake and to make sure that they are removed before cutting. I dont think it'd be possible to cut them but it would be possible to serve a whole one with a piece of cake.

lovingcakes:
Be careful about the type of ribbon you choose. Cloth will absorb the oil and moisture from the buttercream icing. It may look darker or greasy. Try something coated or mesh like boonenati did on the buttercream.

I have never used pins. A little icing where the ends join or a line of icing all the way around under the ribbon has always been enough for me. I would be afraid to use a pin in something to be eaten even though it is large.

Your cakes are beautiful boonenati!

Best of Luck
