Anyone know what the requirements are? Ive been looking all over my states Ag site, small businesses site, etc and cant find any of this info. Im just praying we are one of those states that dont require a separate kitchen and all that jazz.

Missouri is unfortuantely one of the states that requires that the business NOT be in the home, or at least a commercial type of kitchen.

Check with the local health inspector.

I'm well aware that the Missouri website(s) say nothing about it, but it is in fact a law. thumbsdown.gif

Seriously?? Well that's just wonderful. I'll check with the health inspector on Monday. I suppose I'll just have to continue to keep things low key for now and hope for the best.

Hi LMN...

I also live in Springfield, MO and I would eventually love to have an in-home cake decorating business. Would you mind posting the results of your phone call to the health inspector? I'm going to be searching for information also and will let you know what I come across.

Good luck!
Stephanie

I have a home business in Missouri. Different counties have different rules. I received my license this fall. The law changed in August for us. I wrote the first thread posted by wcgirl. Click on it and I discuss it further. My business is limited to cakes and cookies. I don't fry things like donuts, etc so that may be different but as far as cakes and cookies I am good to go.

Cool! icon_cool.gif I am going to call my county's health department and see what I can find out. Thanks for the info!

Whew, thanks guys. I was really scared for a little while there.

So depending on your county, which I'm in Green, you can either operate out of your kitchen with or without a license so long as you stick to baked goods? So why get a license? Besides the fact that some folks would prefer a licensed baker. If you get one do you have to have a commercial kitchen or have you just been inspected by the health department and passed? Id much rather be licensed just so I can say that I am and do some advertising and such.

Monday cant come fast enough lol.

The reason to have the license is to make money "legally" and so the state can take taxes from you. Don't forget you may need insurance too. Business related, not just homeowners. You don't need someone suing you for your home and car.

There's always downfalls to owning a business...
