OK ladies and gentlemen!)....I have gotten several orders for this cake. The folks really like them, but I was wondering if there is a trick to the corners (getting it all even to where it looks like a real box) And, some tips on how to get a pleat to make these bows look like they're fabric? I have made 4 of them now and have the same issue - is there a trick to these things?

(it won't let me put a pic here....it is in my photos.)

what I do , as soon as i'm done putting the FOndant over the cake, I try to fit the corners first, before doing the sides..and make you Fondant thicker that it would normally be,, because if it is thin, you willl get so many 'Pleats", "wrinkles" and "folds" ..and with the heat from your hands, smoothen the corners even more after you're done with the sides...

for the bow, make a stip of Fondant, the size depends on you, fold each side towards the middle, press down slightly, then pinch the top and bottom towards the center, then make a small strip, and wrap it around the "pinched" part.. I hope this helps.. icon_smile.gificon_smile.gif

Thank you for those tips - I haven't gotten brave enough to try covering the square cake with fondant yet.....the one in my pic is buttercream. (I should've pointed that out in my post!) Your suggestions will come in handy when I do attempt that though.

I will try "pinching" the bow parts by the center and see how that works.

Also - is there a good way to "hide" where all the ribbon parts meet...I try to cut them as close as I can, but you can still see where they come together. I've thought about using a star tip and just adding a circle of tiny stars there, but haven't tried it - afraid it would make it worse (since all 4 of these cakes were sold to people)

I had to blow up your cake to see what you mean about the ribbons meeting. So you did a good job hiding it. Since I was looking for it, I was able to find it icon_smile.gif

Anyway, I just let them continue under the bow, like they would with a normal fabric bow (and let the bow itself cover the ends). This way you don't have any edges showing.

Also, for the bow, you might want to try adding a little gum-tex to your fondant. I haven't tried it yet (I don't make too many bows) so hopefully someone here can elaborate, but from what I know it makes the fondant more pliable and therefore easier to make a bow and pleats without cracking the fondant.

If you do try it, let us know how it works.

Good luck!

Ok - I have been putting them together the wrong way....I was putting the actual bow part on first, the adding the ribbon sections. I need to do the opposite, ribbons first then cover the ends with the bow! Thanks!!

Any ideas on how to get the corners straight and real sharp?
