Has anyone used bumble bees in any form to decorate a cake. I would like to make them small enough to have some appear to fly above the cake. What would I make them out of. Fondant, royal frosting, candy, etc. Any ideas?
Would you have any pictures to help me out.
I made a bumblebee for my DD's 3rd birthday. I made the flower cake and put the bumblebee cake on top. I used the mini bear pan for it. It sounds like you want something smaller though.
I had this in my favorites. There's one with a bumblebee on it.

You could probably stick the bees on wire to have them over top your cake...
Good luck!
Hmmm ... maybe you could find yellow jordan almonds for the body, then use black fondant for the stripes and white for the wings, and piping gel for the face? Just a thought ...
I made a bee hive cake with bees flying over it. There is not a pic in my photos. I took some yellow fondant, and black fondant made littlie balls out of each, put the balls together then squeezed. yellow ball, black ball, yel, black, squeeze. the wings where flattened thin pieces of white. I stuck them on thin wire and put in the cake. I hope this makes sense, the kids are in my ear.
you could use wafer paper and then put the bees on a thin wire to hover just above the cake. I have a bee cake in my photos but it is just the bee and nothing else. if you want that kind of cake i can tell you how i did it. good luck finding what you want.
I made this cake
The bees are yellow fondant balls, white fondant hearts cut in half for the wings, and black fondant strips for the strips. I used a toothpick dipped in black food color to make the eyes.
Thanks so much to everyone that answered my post. Yours ideas have been very helpful and have given me alot of wonderful ideas. I was really stumped about how realistic I should try to be. These bees are whimsical perfect to use on a baby shower cake. Now I am really excited about trying out a few of the ideas you have given me. It is really fantastic to have a sight like this to talk to other people, who are sooo very clever with their ideas and abilities. I'll take a pix of the cake when I am finished and try to figure out how to post it. I have never put a cake up before. Again, thank you all !!!!!!
I made the bees on this cake out of yellow fondant that I painted black stripes on. After I rolled the bodies, I put them on a pretty stiff wire. I used seed stamens for the anntenna and the eyes. I didn't put wings on them though.
Uuh, I am allergic to bees and they kind of give me the creeps so when I saw this amazing cake, I cringed! These are too darn realistic, haha, what an amazing job. They look like bees so much, I am freaking! What a wonderful cake and so realistic! Kudos!

Here is a picture of the bee cake that I made for my sister's birthday. The bees are all made out of fondant and stuck on wires to dry.
Well gee, now this one is too cute too, a different take on bees and such each cake pictured here but all so wonderful. Great job, love it!
