I'm just starting the cake decorating thing...about 3 or 4 months into it. I'm doing cakes for friends, family and coworkers so far. This past month my friends have started sending referrals from friends that see pictures of my cakes.
I got an order from a friend of a friend who was turning 40 and wanted a helicopter cake since he just got his private pilot license. I'm not one to deny a challenge, so I went for it.
I couldn't think of a way to make a cake helicopter, so I made a cake landing pad and made the helicopter out of Wilton candy clay. It was soooo hard. Literally, rock hard and almost impossible to mold by hand. After like 3 hours I finally settled. The helicopter was a little too heavy and sank in the cake a bit, but he seemed to like it. I think I just need to learn to be less critical. Or maybe they're just being nice. For $40, what can they really expect? icon_razz.gif

I really like that cake. What pan did you use to make it?

You're being way too hard on yourself--it looks great. You'd have carved away so much cake to make a helicopter that you'd have had to sit it on a sheet cake, anyway. Your solution was much better.

Next time you make a heavy topper, sit it on a disk of gum paste or chocolate and put one plastic dowel into the cake under it. That will prevent that sinking problem.

Nglez09 - I just cut a 12x18 in half and stacked it.

Rae - Thanks for the great tip! I could've used that tip many cakes ago.

Thanks everyone else for the compliments!

THe cake looks great! I couldn't have done it. And remember .... the people you are giving the cake to can't do anything CLOSE to this, so anything you do, they are going to think is fan-tabulous anyway!!!!

We are our own worst critic. Ya dun good!!
