This is my first attempt at making and using MMF--I loved working with it! I found it much easier than store-bought-fondant, and it is definitely much less expensive!

I'd love some tips on what I could do to improve this cake.

Thanks!

Some people might tell you to color the fondant before applying it the the cake.

But, I like your cake the way it is. It reminds me of a Monet painting.

I was wondering about when I should add the color...which is when I decided I would just paint it and try 2 new techniques at once!

So...when should I add color? When mixing, or later when I'm getting ready to roll it out and apply it to the cake?

I think it is easiest to add it to the melted marshmallows before you start adding the powdered sugar.

I have colored fondant both ways. Before adding the powdered sugar and after it is completely mixed. I have had success both ways.

I love the effect of the painting, too. The tree and leaves look fantastic. The only thing I would suggest (though you can color the fondant, I like this look better) is to paint the grass and sky in some kind of pattern, so it doesn't look haphazard. For example, you could do a swirly pattern in the sky, and short vertical strokes for the grass, just so the brush marks look more deliberate.

You've probably also figured this out, too, but it would probably be a good idea to paint the tiers before they're assembled, then paint the tree once it's on the already-colored cake. The leaves would probably be best painted before putting them on the cake. That way you have less white where you're too afraid to paint the background rather than the leaves.

Love your design. Great cake!
