I haven't made a 3D cake yet, but I was wondering how you cut them to serve it? Just cut a wedge out so far down and around it, then work your way down to the bottom? Like the doll cakes, or a ball cake, how do you cut them for serving? Probably a stupid question but everytime I see a 3D cake I wonder, I HAVE to finally know lol!! Thanks icon_biggrin.gif

Good question. I did the small wedge thing. We didn't eat much of it since we are used to torted cakes and missed the extra frosting. I made Barbie just for practice and then my dd didn't want her for her bday. Maybe b/c we ate cake slices from Barbies rear end? icon_smile.gif

Make some extra frosting to serve with any cake that is short! Or better yet, a flavoured sauce to plate it with (choclte, raspberry, caramel... whatever!)

I'm thinking that it could be torted still, like a regular cake, do you think? The barbie? Just cut it somewhere close to midway, anyone ever tried that yet? I bet somewhere here some one has icon_smile.gif

I hand them over and hope that somebody at the party will figure it out!

I had never actually cut one of my own cakes until my own engagement party where I suddenly had a crowd of people standing around me waiting for the first slice...it was more nerve racking than delivering a cake!

I am wondering the same thing. I think a saw something about this a couple of months ago. That is actually one of the things I was looking for tonight when I signed on.

It seems like I read something about cutting the cake down the middle then laying the two halves on their flat side to do the cutting. That makes sense just to keep the cake from tipping over.

I am still looking for any other info I can find.

I, personally, have never made a Barbie or doll cake but this is what I think:
The skirt for the dolls is too short. I think it's very cute, but it is not in proportion to the body of the doll. What if you made this cake into 2 cakes by cutting it in the middle, horizontally. Put the top cake on its' own cakeboard (I guess you might need to cut a hole in the middle of it to stick the doll through?), torte them, fill them, dowel them, and then stack them....put in the doll and then ice as normal.
You will have 2 cakes that are easy to serve and your skirt will be in proportion to the dolls body.

The skirt is too short, you need about 2 to 3 inches more depth to accomodate Barbie to the waist. So I make another layer, usually a 9 inch petal pan because it fits nicely with the skirt idea or a regular round about the same size, or much larger if you need more cake. I board each cake separately for easy of serving and dowel it of course, not because it needs the dowelling for the weight, just for ease of serving. then I serve the bottom cake or cakes separately and I cut the Wondermold down the centre and it can be again split in half if you like and cut sideways so each piece does get icing.
I do the same thing with most 3-d cakes, split in half lengthwise and again so it is in 4 vertical portions, then put each quarter on its side and cut into wedges.

Heehee, you are welcome, but I would hate to tell you how long it took me to figure out how to serve these cakes, I just never really thought of it, haha! But once I made the stand-up bear, I had to think! Not too many plates large enough to serve that one if you cut in wedges, haha!
I agree though, you can always have extra icing or a fruit sauce or something like that to pour over the cut slices.
