Can I use food coloring to color buttercream or no? How do I get my buttercream a certain color I want. Also if I had one more egg to my mix will it make it more moist or just add height? I read that someone puts an extra egg in their mix but I don't know why. Thank You

Hi jmcakes.

I guess you could use food coloring to your buttercream, though I have never done that myself. They make special little jars of coloring just for this purpose. They are like a paste or thick gel. Wal-Mart sells them in the craft dept. for $1.27 each or so. Or you can find them many other places, like Michael's, Jo-Ann's, Hobby Lobby, cake supply stores.

As far as your cake goes, I always add an extra egg to the mix. It does make it more moist. I also add a box of dry pudding mix to the cake mix as well. It also helps with moisture and texture in your cake.

Good luck and welcome to Cake Central.

heres my two cents...
if you use buttercream with shortening in it and then food colouring which is water based it ends up separating and the food colouring works its way to the top...(trust me, it isn't pretty) so I use the previously made gels....
