Oh my gosh! Tonight at work we had a patient come in that had consumed and entire bottle of 16oz. vanilla. I thought to myself no big deal. Until I found out that vanilla contains 35% alcohol!!!! I never knew that. Her ethanol level was pushing 300. Unbelievable!

Nope I have never tasted it on it's own and since I don't drink alcohol I don't think I ever will icon_biggrin.gif

The big joke around our house is that my sil dared my dh (stands for dumb husband in this case) to drink some when he was younger. He actually did it!!! He's always trying to get my kids to try it.

Real extract isn't so bad, but the imitation flavored stuff. no thanks. I don't drink it straight up, but occasionally add some to my Coke...

I've got some home made stuff going now in some vodka (madagascar beans), and in a month or so, should have some decent "real" extract.

You know how I found out vanilla has alcohol....that tv show "Momma's Family! LOL! I used to watch it all the time when I was a kid and there was an episode where she was baking and started to drink the vanilla and got drunk.
I have been using Watkin's brand vanilla that is made with Madagascar Bourbon vanilla beans and it has a low alcohol content (like 8% I think but don't quote me on that!). It's double strength too and it is really great. Everyone that has had my cakes since I started using that has noticed the difference and really love it!

That's why people use it to stick fontant together and paint with luster dust. The alcohol evaporates quickly.

susan,
Was she a alcoholic looking for a fix? I used to see this from the town drunk years ago in ER at the hospital I worked at. Mouth wash is another one they will drink and there are many more.

and then there is the ever popular Niqual (sp?) drinkers. Once you beat the cough you really ought to stop buying the cough medicine, right?!!

that is how my brother used to get a buzz before he was old enough to buy beer. (sigh)

Yes unfortunately she is an alcoholic. But she was also trying to commit suicide because she took A LOT of pills along with it. I do remember seeing something about "Madagascar Vanilla" on the bottle. And yes she drank the whole bottle. Very sad...

My DH swears that putting a little vanilla extract on a burnt tongue will make it feel better. I can't get past the nasty taste. YUCK!
