I need some help. I have tried numerous times to get MMF to a dark or vibrant color. To no avail.

Today I am trying to make a burgandy bow. I am using Americolor Burgandy. It will not get burgandy, instead it is a deep pink. I tried painting a small piece and I got it burgandy that way, but I don't want to have to paint my fondant to get it the dark or vibrant colors. What am I doing wrong. or do I just need to add more color gel?

Help!!!!

Here is a picture -- the small piece I painted with the gel mixed with extract.

The only thing I can think of; are you putting enough drops to the fondant. How much fondant are you using plus you may have to let it set for awhile to deepen. By looking at the picture it looks like not enough drops were added to the fondant. I have not had any problems with getting the deep colors from americolor but I was using small amounts of fondant.

Sorry, I could not be much help.

Good luck.

Just a question, when are you adding the coloring? I find that when I add the coloring right from the micro BEFORE the powdered sugar it tends to get much darker. I do this when I make black. Good luck!

I have been adding it after it is mixed. When you add in at the beginning how much color do you have to add. Does it get dark before you start rolling it out adding it then?

Rexy Is that what you did with your whimsey cake?

I noticed in another post last night that we have a new member who is actually an Americolor rep...his name is Colorboy. You might want to pm him and ask him what his thoughts are.

I haven't used any dark colors with MMF yet. I did do kelly green once and didn't have any problems with it getting as bright/dark as I needed, and I added it after the MMF was mixed. Sorry I can't offer more advice. icon_sad.gif

You can tell right from the start how much you'll need to add. The fondant will only lighten a little bit after you add the sugar. Try adding a few drops, mix while it's still hot and if it's not enough add more. I think you'll be pleased with the results. And yes, that's exactly what I did with the fondant on my whimsey cake.
