My hairdresser wants me to make her daughter's b-day cake and the little girl (12 yrs) wants a hip hop theme with hip hop shoes. Does anyone know what hip hop shoes look like or have any other suggestions for how to make a hip hop themed cake?

They look much like a sneaker, but the soles are different. Here's a link that shoes a few varieties. I see they have other colors now, but I've only seen the girls wearing the black.

I would think you could make some royal musical notes or CD's to go with it...sorry, not much help in the creativity department today!

you could do a cake with the musical bars curving down (like a path like the yellow brick road) and then have the hip hop shoes dancing down the "path" with footprints left behind.

you could make the path out of fondant, let it dry and insert with sticks on top of the cake so it's kind of suspended in air above the cake. You could have musical notes following the foot steps as well.

Maybe put name of some of the hip-hop artists she likes on the cake?Ja Rule...Diddy? Whomever...maybe some fondant "BLING" painted with gold luster dust?

I'd clarify with mom what she expects on the cake. Hip-hop theme is too vague. Hip-hop shoes could mean anything such as a certain style of sneakers or boots. Mom should know her dd's favorite artist/song and you could go from there.

Ask her mom if she already has a pair of these 'hip hop' shoes and if so perhaps she could bring you a digital pic. Failing that then perhaps the name of the brand and you could find them on the internet and go from there. Definitely some sort of 'bling', perhaps her initials done in light grey royal icing with silver dragees put on top to look like diamonds and platinum, or even sanding sugar for 'almost' diamonds.

There is a lot on the net so take a peek there....

I would do a CD cake or even a record (since hip hop djs scratch their records) and then do the shoes and some bling with her initials on top.

Wilton had a cake in one of their old yearbooks where they made the legs on the top and going down the side of the cake w/ the shoes. Are hip hop shoes like what we called Saddle Shoes, w/the black and white. There were from the 50's and 60's. I'm showing my age now! Anybody remember them. Anyway it was cute. I would have to look through my books to remember it more in detail if you are interested.

Records work great too! I did one for the Govenor of IA a few years ago. It was three 6" layers on top of a double layer sheet cake made to look like records. Then I put a half record in front. I used the comb to make the grooves. I also used a plastic mold to make chocolate notes. It was for his 50th so I rubbed gold dust on some of them. I also colored the chocolate black. The borders were hot pink. I put gold candles on the half record in front. Then I put some of his favorite titles on the records. The ones on top were overlapped. I only have a picture w/people in it. I don't know if I can crop them out or not. Anyway Bobby Vee was the entertainer and it was so much fun! My brother was in charge of the party and that is how I got involved. I can try to get a pic posted if youre interested. It was a pretty big cake, but could probably be scaled down.

Thanks auntiecake!!! I'll have to look through the Wilton books I have! The cake you describe sounds very cute and appropriate. I think this little girl is into rap music and such so perhaps I could do the stack of records with shoes around them! Anyway, wouldn't want you to get in trouble for posting a picture with people so you could email it to me instead. Thanks for the advice!

Astro the picture in the Wilton is called Birthday Boogie and it is in the 1980 Wilton yearbook. It is an 8" square pan 3 layers. I will try to send you a copy of this also if you don't have access to this Yearbook . I know its an older one. I would be really cute also. More when I get my picture. Hope this helps a little!

Didn't they make sort of a comeback in the 80's? We called them Saddle Oxfords. (I wasn't around for the 50's & 60's so I'm not sure if the name changed or it's a regional thing.)

Anyway, I always thought hip hop was from the 50's, too, like Happy Days.

Oh, no wonder I don't know anything about hip hop. I can't even bring myself to buy a pair of tennis shoes when they are $40 on sale!!!

I was on the same page as you bakersofcakes! I was a fountain of ideas for a "sock hop" theme until the little one corrected me that hip hop is rap not "that old crap" Geeeeez, I'm not that old!!!

Sure auntiecake, if you think of it. If not that's OK too. I'm interested in the records b/c I might put a stack of records in the middle of a sheet cake and make some royal icing/color flow shoes to go around the stack.

I will get it to you as soon as I can! My scanner is temp on the blink, but should be up again soon! The records were 6" cakes w/ cake disc under them. Then I propped them up on each on the edge. First you need to use the comb to make the grooves. I did the sides in white buttercream and just did the tops in black. The center was made w/ name of record on it. You might want to make them look like CD's or DVD's now. Your know the generation thing. Silver w/name in center but there is still a center hole.

My 14 year-old step-daughter didn't know what a record or record player was until I was cleaning out my basement this past summer. icon_eek.gif It blew me away!

With this in mind I somehow don't think a 13 year old will be able to identify with records...CD's or an MP3, for sure, but those black things that spin, probably not! icon_rolleyes.gif

As you can tell from my pics I just LUUUVVVV colorful cakes !!!!!! Hubbies hopin that I will be able to recoup the price of my christmas pressie in the near future!!! (Hopefully, gonna check it out when I go on vacation). Sorry, where were we??? O yeah, I just had a thought, howsa bout a sheet cake, made to look like the front of a rap artists (guy of course) chest with the bling kinda like "flava flav" with the omg huge jewel encrusted clock and "bling" (gaudy jewelry stuff) all over it?
If you want to see a pic of "over the top" blingage, just type in a rap stars name into the search engine for pictures and see what comes up. Here are some names you can try to see what happens,
flava flav, 50-cent, p-diddy, usher, blackeyed peas... etc.
Hope this helps to get the creative juices flowin.
