I came across this at www.omascakekitchen.homestead.com...I thought everyone would get a laugh from it!
"I had a new customer call me for a Barbie cake for this Saturday, as she had seen one on my website. Then she called me back that evening to cancel it. She was clearly embarrassed, but I was ok with it...stuff happens. I didn't give it a thought. Next day, she calls again. She said her husband had a cow when he was told the price ($45 plus the doll, which is what they go for around here. I do the Wonder mold on top of another layer so the proportions are right, fondant dress, lots of flowers etc, and writing on the cake board.) So HE says "How hard can it be?" HE is going to make the cake. He's taking Friday OFF to do this. Does he bake? No, but again, how hard can it be? He's going to do a carrot cake. I recommend a pound cake instead. Then she asks me where they can buy the special pan. I send her to Michaels, and wish her good luck. Next day, she calls again. She spent the afternoon buying the pan, ingredients etc, but insists that her husband do a trial run. He has insisted on carrot cake. He didn't prep the pan properly, and it came out in pieces. Also, it was a little undercooked in the middle. He glues it together with canned icing, shoves the doll in. The cake falls apart. At this point, he calls THE CATERER for advice. Turns out they're spending $30 a head to cater this party! NOT COUNTING THE LIQUOR!!! And my cake is too expensive??? What does the caterer say? Caterer says, and I quote-"I never do cakes, they're too tricky. You really have to know what you're doing. Just buy the cake." Thank you Mr. Caterer! So now I am doing the cake again."
For those of us with a "business" - we should all put this on our literature or have it posted in our shops!!
Ha! Ha! Jenn!!! This story gave me a chuckle!! Kudos to all us cake decoraters!!

this is perfect! i have been doing cakes for almost two years now and i still get the look of "i can do that" i have only done cakes for friends and family but i hate it when someone gives me that it makes me want to say well if you can do it than do it! I love this story.
Now, the ending would be perfect if they told them since it was late notice, that the price had went up.
What a funny story! Thanks for sharing! After paying $30 a head, $45 shouldn't have been anything!
I would have been SO tempted to make that man follow through with his original plan and make the cake himself. At least he knew when to quit!
Now, the ending would be perfect if they told them since it was late notice, that the price had went up.
HA!! My thoughts, exactly!! lol
This is just so typical. The local Cake supply store has told me a number of stories about people who think they can do a cake for less. They usually spend more in supplies than they would for the cake. Most have to even but cake pans
Theyreally were stupid about the entire ordeal anyway. I mean, even if he makes $6 /hour, in an 8 hour work day he would have made $48! So he lost even more money by staying home and trying to do it himself! Plus the cost of all the supplies and ingredients!
Yep...I agree this was a great story....and you just bent over backwards to help them make the cake..I think that was very professional of you. But in the end they saw it took talent to make the cake. You handled this very well.
Debbie
I bet he spent more money on the pan and supplies then it would have been to buy the cake! hahahaha!
Great story!
What a great story! I just did a doll cake this past weekend and those are tricky cakes!!!!
JennT,
Tooo funnny, printing this out
I get $65.00, doll not included, Barbie comes back to me...I love her to death
He would definitely have a heart attack with my price
So glad everyone is enjoying this!! I just have to reitterate...this did NOT happen to me. I found this story at www.omaskitchen.homestead.com
If this HAD happened to me, I probably would've wanted to make the cake at their house right in front of him (after they called me back to make it, of course). I would've taken all of my equipment over there and made him sit and watch me the entire time, start to finish, just so he could see how much knowledge, talent, ingenuity and patience it really does take to make delicious, beautiful cakes!! lol Not to mention, how to fix those mistakes & mishaps that happen along the way and still come out with a great finished product!
Too Funny................If I was his wife I would have made him call back to reorder the cake.
