I wanted to make a cake for a project I'm doing in school regarding the subject. I was thinking about a head laying on it side with an ear candle made out of fondant in the ear, but I don't know how difficult that would be. I haven't tried cake carving or sculpting yet so I'm looking for other ideas to show ear candling. Thanks for all the help! I posted a picture. Hopefully this helps, I didn't know if I could post one with a face on.
The last time I saw this was in "SHREK", when Shrek pulled out a candle from his ear...
I have heard of it and tried it. You could make a flat cake and just put an ear on it. Making the candle out of fondant might be interesting b/c those suckers are pretty long.
I've heard so many bad things about ear candeling, why don't you put a burnt ear on the cake? Sorry, had to say it.
I'm not sure of any other ideas for that. Are you looking for something else representing the candeling?
I have heard of it, but don't know if I could be much help. What about a head and shoulders with the candle coming out of the ear that way? You could do the head and shoulders like the 3-D spiderman that is in the gallery. Sorry not more help.

I've heard pros and cons about it. How was your experience?
I'm looking for anything to represent ear candling. If I don't have the time to try sculpting a cake, I'm going to just put the fondant ear candles on a flat cake. I want something more interesting though. Any ideas are welcome.
What is ear candleing?
Here's a link that tells you about ear candling. I was going to copy and paste the paragraphs, but I couldn't.

It was ok, didn't really help but I had more ear pain after that. Then I started reading all kinds of horror stories on the internet!! EEEKK!
How are you with fondant?? I think candles in the middle of the cake with little ears as a border would be cute! You could probably use the real candles on the cake if they were just laying there. No different than putting a real candle on a cake. It's just a different type of wax.
I'm ok with fondant. I was going to make a candle out of fondant. That's easy since I just keep wrapping around. The ear border idea sounds really cute! Thanks for the help.
So let me get this right... People can make candles out of Ear Wax??? Ummmmmm hmmmmm I hope I don't offend anyone when I say ewwwwwwwww!
Sorry Susanrcp you are a little off but that was a great laugh! I keep picturing Shrek.
It's a long hollow section of a wax material that you stick in your ear and burn. The "theory" is that is sucks out the junk and evil demons Well, I threw in the evil demon part but it's supposed to help ear problems

LOL...just a bit off. mamafrogcakes is right. It supposed to get rid of some of the toxins in your ear.
mamafrogcakes,
Did the person that did your ear candling cut the remaining part of the candle for you to see? That stuff can look pretty nasty.
Whew! I'm glad you straightened that one out for me! But I wonder if it's possible! Nevermind lol
DH did it...after all he knows everything We did look inside it but what I've read is that is actually the melted wax. Hmmm, now there's an idea for a cake, melted wax all over it!
Can I have all of my sophomores ear-candled?? It's seems they have a hard time hearing at times....I'd even bake them a cake for the occasion.
No b/c if that were true I would have been doing DH's ears instead of him doing mine!
I've read varying reports claiming that the gunk inside is melted wax or actual toxins. It all goes down to whether your a believer or a sceptic.
My sister is a certified massage therapist, and she had to take a course on ear candling in order to be certified. Apparently it is becoming a common practice. She said that they were taught that the gunk inside is usually about half candle beeswax and half ear wax. Her explanation was that the smoke from the burning waxy material creates a suction inside the ear canal when the candle is inserted and held properly.
I would just do a sheet cake and carve it in the basic shape of an ear. Cut a hole in the center for the "candle", and use the fondant like you had imagined for the candle. I would even make the tip of the candle black or something so it looks like it's been burned.
First of all, this is the most disgusting thread and yet I couldn't stop reading until I read all the posts.
Secondly, mamafrogcakes--I think we're married to the same man because MY husband knows everything too! What are the odds!

How is it disgusting? I don't see anything disgusting about it.

I haven't tried my hand at carving a cake yet. Do you have any suggestions on how to carve an ear out? I have the MMF made already. I was going to make my ear candles, but if I'm going to do a big ear, I'll wait until I make them. I was thinking about "burning" the tip too.
Oh I agree that talking about ear wax, nasty junk that comes out of the ear and how to make a cake out of it could be construed as gross.
Now, as to how to make the ear, I say just take a wad of fondant put a picture of an ear right by you and get to molding! I think that would be easier than trying to carve a cake, but you have a lot more detail on the opening of the ear.
I would think that you could use a melon baller or something similar using a picture of an ear to guide you. Taht way you get e nice roundness in the grooves just like a real ear.
Yikes! I think I'll stick with my ENT.
The fondant ear sounds like the best way to go (no pun intended0.
I like the cake with little ears placed around it the best...
My husband and I do ear candling and we had no problems up until 6 months ago... hubby stopped at the health food store to pick some up and had gotten some ones that we had never gotten before....the lady at the store did her part and told "now with these candles you only burn them down an inch or two and that's it, these are covered with a different wax that burns hotter...now hubbie was not feeling well and COMPLETELY forgot to tell me this... so I lit the ear candle and started to burn the ear candle down as usual... well the candle had burned down about 4 inches when all of the sudden the wax that had been building up went right back down into my husband's ear...well on our way to the ER he remembered to tell me how I was supposed to use the candle The emergency room people had never heard of using ear candles before and apparently my husband was the talk of the ER that night because of it... I was a little mad and stressed out about what happened..but as usual my husband got me to laugh, about it and other things...while we we waiting for the doctor to come in after the nurse had stopped by he starts playing with everything...well you know the really bright moveable "spot" lights they have in the rooms that are attached to a movable arm...he goes "what's this?", turns it on, and nearly blinds himself in the process because the light is sooooo bright and he had the light sooo close to his face when he had turned it on....I laughed sooooo hard that the nurses and doctors sitting at the nurses station heard me and started to laugh (and talk about us again) Hubby's hearing was not affected in any way by what happened...and he learned his lesson too!
Oh my goodness! I'm glad your husband's ok! After all that, do you and your husband still ear candle? Your story is the first I've heard about burning with a reason. (How you should only burn the candle 1-2").
The stories I've read don't say why the user got burned.
As for the cake, I've decided to try and to a big ear with an ear candle sticking out, burned at the top. I just made the ear candle today. I hope the ear will go ok.
Thanks for everyone's suggestions!
Had this done once and the candle came out the other ear, hhmn, what does that mean? Big space between ears possibly/ Sorry couldn't resist!
Hugs Squirrelly
