For those of you who are experienced in all kinds of fondants....what is the difference between MMF and say Wilton ready to use fondant? Is one easier to work with? Does one give a prettier finish? Does one taste better than others?

MMF is MUCH better tasting in my opinion and it is cheaper. You can use them the same.
MMF is very easy to make and colors well. I think it taste like the orange circus peanut candy you used to eat as a child, while the Wilton fondant taste like Elmer's glue (also like you used to eat as a child) LOL

mgowan,

I've only used the Wilton and MMF fondant.

Wilton's fondant is good for sculpting, flower making, etc., dries hard and fast...taste bad.

MMF is good for covering cakes...have a really good taste...easy to work with once I got the hang of how to cover cakes icon_lol.gif

i am not experienced at all with fondant and mmf. i did do one fondant cake in my cake decorating class and haven't used it since i thought i was terrible and hated it on my sisters wedding cake 5 yrs ago. since then i have made many cakes for all occasions but all with buttercream. i have even made my sons first birthday cake with a small aquarium in it. fake fish floating around. my sister is insisting i make her cake and use mu creativity but she wants that smooth finish of fondant. i want to use mmf but don't know a recipe for it or really anything about it. can someone give some helpful advise on what to do. anything is great. have great recipes. i so damn it's embarassing but i have to ask icon_cry.gificon_sad.gif i dont even know how to post my pictures on this web site icon_lol.gif

Here's a recipe for MMF with pictures. It's great. I made it myself the first time about a month ago...although I made a mess of things because I didn't have a KitchenAid at the time. I just made some yesterday. It's very simple to make and work with. It tastes really good too.

I have a KA but I still make the MMF by hand, stir in the powdered sugar till you can't stir anymore, then plop it out on the table with lots of powdered sugar to knead into it. Works out great! After it has cooled it will be like a rock - you will need to soften it by putting it in the microwave for a few seconds -then knead it with greased hands till it's all pliable. I do not use anymore powdered sugar for rolling it, I just grease everything up with plain crisco - and I have never had any problems with it drying and cracking that way.

For the recipe, do a search on here, it is really simple.....a bag of marshmellows, some vanilla and water!
