I am considering working as a Cake N Crumbs consultant/instructor. Has anyone done this before or considering it? I'm in NC and I don't think that there are many of these instructors in this area. This kinda goes along with the PC people. I'm looking for feedback - postive and negative about this business. I need to build a second income so that I can fund a garage/kitchen for my dessert business.
Thanks in advance for your input. I've learned so much from all of you on this site! Each cake that I make keeps looking better and better!!

miss diva,
I haven't heard of this outfit here in Colorado, but then again I live in the eastern half of the state and don't get to Denver that much. It might be there somewhere though. But if this turns out to be legit, hun, I say ... go fer it!!!!

Sorry, I've never heard of it. Though the name Cake N Crumbs sure sticks out in my head. There might be a bakery with that name that I've seen online. Not sure. Good luck getting info. Someone will surely be able to help you~

I had considered it. The lady who runs the company is very nice and helpful. I called and talked to her directly. I have heard good things about it. I just can't spare the time right now. Plus, I'm not super outgoing like that. If you are a good salesperson and you know people who are willing to host parties and have the income to spend on the products it would be a good way to go. If you will PM me your email addy I can try to get you in touch with some folks who have done it. HTH!

I talked with a Cake N Crumbs rep a few months ago about doing it, but then I got so busy with my baking, I had no time to even consider it. She did give me a bit of info. I think I might have saved it, if you would like it. Let me know.

Yep--I did save it. It has a start-up fee of $270.00 and you get almost $500 worth of supplies and equipment. It seemed like a good deal--especially if you are the first in your area to do it. I liked the idea that everybody got to go home with something.

I looked into it at one time but don't have the money to start up right now. I think it'd be pretty successful if you had the start up money and a base of people you could start getting parties with immediately. I think the parties would catch on pretty quickly, since they are more fun that your typical tupperware stuff. Also I was not sure how much stuff would actually sell...people would love to learn to make the stuff but would they buy it?

Let us know if you try!

Kitagrl--
I agree, I have a few friends that would like to learn a few of the techniques but It's not somthing that they yearn to do. Me--I'm always looking and thinking "How could I use that?" in my decorating. But I have been wrong before. I tried Tastefully Simple as a side business but I never could get it to catch on here. Definitely have to know the right people for that one--It's gourmet foods and a little pricey. Here in ET, the ones that could afford it, don't usually have home parties. I only did that for about 2 years before I stopped.

My friend had a similar experience with Mary Kay...people enjoyed inviting their friends and having a "free makeover" but when it came down to buying the expensive items, it really wasn't paying well.

She switched to Avon. icon_smile.gif

I looked at the Cakes n Crumbs website and there really isn't too much on there that I would personally need or buy...of course I know where to get the things I need already...but I'd be afraid it would go the same route as the Mary Kay parties.

I checked into this company and the only thing I really didn't like is that if you don't have all 6 parties(I think it was 6) in such a time frame, they will charge you the whole $500

Thanks barbara-ann for that info. The girl I talked with did not mention that part. She has called a couple of times but I told her I was way too busy at the time to even consider it and that I would get back with her after the first of the year. Now, I know I won't do it--I'm too busy to commit myself to that.

Thanks Ladies for all of your input. I'm supposed to talk with someone that has been with Cake n' Crumbs after the holidays. She has been with the company nine years. My fear is that it will be like Mary Kay. Also, there is person in my church that has his own home-based bakery that I will be speaking with as well after the holidays. Trying to cover all my bases. I don't think that I'll have the time (nor money) for Cake n' Crumbs (the $270) because I've signed up for an Entreprenuership course at my local community college starting in January. At the end of the course, I will have a business plan and hopefully several organizations to approach about financing.

Diva, I just looked at their site and to be honest, you can make your own money doing cakes and giving lessons. My daughter in law just got out of Discovery Toys home plan. You need tons of parties to make any money. But good luck with your decision. Helen

Thanks, Candyladyhelen, I'm about to agree with you. I made quite a bit of money over the holidays and I think I would be better off to do it own my own! At least that way everything I make I can put back into the business and expand that way!
I appreciate everyone's advice and encouragement! I'll keep you posted. I plan to post my cake pictures here soon.

I just saw on the Wilton site that a store only a couple miles from my house has an opening for an instructor so I just might pursue that route...hmmmm.

Diva, I too talked directly to the lady who started the company. I am from WI and she said she was also, I am a registered nurse and she said she was also. (something started to smell right about now) I also think there is the demand for this cake decorating education but she is pushing the products that you can get else where cheeper. Or with your 40% off coupon from Micheals. I think you would fall into the same trap as the Mary Kay parties as talked about in these posts. Be sure to read all the very fine print and what is said inbetween the lines. And the most interesting thing she said to me was that she had never heard of cake central!!!!!! That of course turned me off right away!!!!!
Best Wishes if you do it, not many people are doing it so you would have the open market.
Happy New Year!!!!
