I was wondering what the difference is between using salted and unsalted butter really makes in a recipe. The reason I ask is because the price difference is about 1 dollar for unsalted and I don't know why it is more. Does it make a big difference in the baking?
Thanks
Shayla
From what I've heard, the salted butter cuts down on the sweetness of the icing, especially in the buttercream. Some people even add some salt to their icings to cut the sweetness.
I use either or. It depends what is on sale. I suppose the salted will cut down a little on the sweetness, but i really cant tell the difference.
I have different icing recips that call for unsalted & salted butter. The unsalted recipes sometimes say add 1/8 t. salt. SO... your getting salt anyway. I use salted butter in all my icing & cakes~
I think it depends on the brands too. Some are saltier than others. I use unsalted. If you think it needs it, then you can add the salt. I prefer no salt. Maybe my tastebuds are messed up or it's the brand I use but the salted comes out sweeter than the unsalted which seems to have a milder flavor.
like I posted before our commissary doesnt carry alot of one brand or type product so if I want something I have to settle for what they have, thats main reason why I dont use real butter much at all. but if i get the salted butter I wouldnt add more salt....I dont think you really have to.
Thanks guys, I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't going to ruin things by using the salted butter. I do not add extra salt when using salted butter unless it calls for a larger amount than the 1/8 or 1/4 tsp.
I can tell a difference in the taste and neither can my customers.... even when I tell them. I buy whichever... I'm not faithful.
