A friend of mine is having a baby shower for another friend and wants me to do the cake. I am thrilled of course but they live about 2 hours from me. The other issue is the mother-to-be wants something different i.e. not a sheet cake. I really want to do this especially because sometimes all I get to do are sheet cakes. Does anyone have any suggestions for travelling that type of distance with a cake? What type of cake would be best to try and make?
It's in Feb. so temp isn't a problem.
Thanks for any help!

If you're going to attempt sculpting something, i would suggest a pound cake or a mudcake. If you need a mudcake recipe send me an email.

PS: I am travelling about 2 hours with a wedding cake on Saturday, it's white mud with fondant icing. Wish me luck : )
I dont think it will be a problem as i've travelled up to 1.5 hours with cakes before.

Keep the cake shape wider at the base and not too tall (this is not the time for architectural wonders!) and you should be fine.

Make extras of any delicate pieces and don't apply them until you get there if possible.

Be sure to get a piece of the rubber canvas, no that's the wrong name,(you know the woven-looking non-slip stuff you put under area rugs to keep them from sliding? ... You can buy small rolls of it at many stores like Walmart, or you can get it at a fabric store by the yard)...

Otherwise ...drive carefully and have fun!

Mud cake is a very firm, chocolate cake (white, dark or caramel).
It's very moist, basically the chocolate, butter and sugar are melted with the milk, and allowed to cool before the dry ingredients are added. Very easy to make, rich, yummy, devine!! A favourite for weddings in Australia. Just takes a lot longer to bake.
