Cake Decorating As A Side Business/hobby
Business By trumpetmidget Updated 23 Feb 2007 , 3:16am by MomLittr
I have been making cakes for about 2 years now for my family and friends. I bring them to parties, etc. Many times, people ask me how much I charge. I have always said that i don't do it for a living and just for fun. Lately, though, the questions have been more often. So, my question for you, is - if I decide to make a couple of cakes for people and actually charge, do I have to go through licensing and things like that? I live in Pennsylvania, if that matters. I am making a birthday cake for a friend and have a feeling a few of her family members may be interested in me doing theirs, too, from the way she is talking. I need money right now, but I don't want to start a cake business. I want to be choosy. Any help would be great.
Thanks!
There are many, many cake decorators that are not licensed, me included. I started as a hobby, went to a business, and now I'm back to the hobby.
Usually, if you don't make anyone angry, you probably won't have any problems. If asked, you are paid in "tips". Your customers have offered to pay for ingredients and gave you a tip on top of that for your time and talent.
Charge what you think is fair or what you would be willing to pay, keep track of it (just in case), and have a good time with it. Being choosy is great, not everyone can do it. I'm glad I have that option too.
Good luck with your venture.
Michele
I sat down and made myself a price list showing what I will charge if anyone asks (basic cake, frosting, decorations) and what I will charge for extras. Now my prices are low (like $15 for a 6" cake) compared to others, but I want this to stay as a hobby, but one that pays for itself. Basically only do orders for friends, family and co-workers.
