I signed up to take a cake decorating class taught my Colette Peters at the Notter school in Orlando.

They sent me my confirmation with the following instructions "We ask that you wear a chefs jacket and non-slip non-heal kitchen shoes to class each day. In addition, you may also bring an apron to protect your chefs jacket."

Okay, I don't have no chef's jacket, in fact I don't even own an apron and WHAT ARE KITCHEN SHOES?

Now I have to shop for an outfit for this thing. Oh boy.

I'm not 100% certain but I think chef's shoes are those plastic clogs that chef's wear in the kitchen. I think Birkenstock makes some. Surely there are less expensive varieties as well! I bet you could do an ebay serach and find both the jacket and shoes. Let us know how the class goes!

I believe what they are saying is to wear flat or low healed non skid shoes,

I have worked in quite a few kitchens and in culinary school and that was the kind of shoes that were required.

Kitchen floors can be slick when something is spilled or they have water on them,so you want a pair of shoes that are not prone to slipping, they also use perferated mats on the floor and high heeled shoes are prone to sticking in the holes.

You will also probably be standing a good bit of the time and you will want your shoes to be comfortable.

Do a search (google) for chef's jackets. I found some really cheap that you can also get a monogram on. I think I paid about $15.00 for mine. I just can't remember where I got them.

I just invested in a pair of Dansko chef shoes and they are the most wonderful shoes i have ever put on. They are a bit on the expensive side, I paid about $125 for mine but well worth it. Even when I'm just working in my kitchen I wear them and at the end of the day my back and legs feel great. You can find them at most uniform shops but here is a link to their site.

http://www.dansko.com/Home.aspx

You can also buy Chef's coats at most uniform shops and they are not that expensive.

Enjoy the class, I too would LOVE to be in one of her classes.

Yep... I had the same questions. I wonder we can just wear sneakers? I'll have to call and see. I spent enough on the class... I don't want to have to spend a ton on clothes too!

For the record Peacock, I didn't get in the Feb class, there is another one offered in March so I'll be in that one. Unfortunately I was waiting on my husband because I talked to him about making it a christmas gift and he dilly-dallied around and next thing the is was SOLD OUT. I put my name on the waiting list for Feb but they said I am #6 on the list, so I don't think I'll get in.

I'm really bummed because I wanted to do both classes.

Dansko clogs are great for the kitchen. They're expensive( about $125), but there is an Dansko outlet 5 minutes from my house and all shoes are 50% off regular price. They are located in West Grove, PA, maybe they do orders over the phone?! Worth a shot...

TickledPink,

The shoes are called Treadsafe and you can get them at Walmart for 20 dollars. I got my checf's jacket at a store here calle LIT for 13.00. If you have a wholesale to public restaurant supply near you, you can probably find one there......

Hope this helps

Also, I know how you feel about being a Newbie. I took Food Prep 1 at the Community College this semester and I was the oldest person in the class.
I cannot tell you how many times I was mistaken for the instructor!!! It was really hilarious....Anyway, I am so envious, would love to take a class from Collette.....Have fun and take lots of pictures.

I'd wear a black cape and shoes shaped like chicken feet. If they say anything to you at all...just look at them...with a far away look..and reply "I wouldnt worry about me if I were you....or would I?"

Hi, uniforms are required in most professional kitchens due to sanitary reasons.

No one is allowed to enter even our school lab hallways if they are NOT in full uniforms. Everytime we step away from the labs for any reasons we must leave our aprons and side towels behind.

Any uniform store will have a chef jacket, the good thing is that you can try them on and see if they fit. They should be loose enough so that you may be able to work comfortably. Raise your hands and make sure you can move in them.

They are Not the most flattering things ever, so make sure you wear a short sleeve T-Shirt underneath, to absorb sweat and so that when you leave the class room you can remove your jacket if you are so inclined.

For the money that you are paying at the Notter School, THEY should provide you with a jacket! WOW.

There is a shoe place in Orlando that we order our school shoes from..

Here is the name..."GRABBERS , slip resistant footwear from...KNAPP" The first shoe they gave us looked like a sneaker, now we can wear a slip on..here is the model number....2360

I think I am going to see what I can find at Wal-Mart. The class is 4 days and I really don't want or like ugly shoes. I probably will never wear them again.

I found jacket online and next time I'm in Orlando I am going to check out some uniform places.

I just think it's funny, having to dress up and all. Next thing they will say I have to work CLEANLY.... hahahaaa.... I am wayyyy messy.

lol, I'm a shoe freak and I would wear my ugly shoes again, they are NOT that ugly..even the new slip on ones too!.. icon_biggrin.gif

I'm such a shoe hound I moved to my new place because it had a walk in closet that I could organize my shoe collection..lol icon_rolleyes.gif

and as far as working messy...if you have other people on your table...if you have to share your work space...THEY WILL let you know about THAT ...and quickly!

Working cleanly is working efficiently and working efficiently is working quickly and working quickly is working profitably!...just an FYI..lol icon_biggrin.gif

But all that is just kinks that you will eventually work out, as you get quicker, get more experience...

(dunno about that, my family says I take over when I make cakes..lol thumbs_up.gif )
