Hi,

I found a recipe for some Five Rose Sugar Cookies that were said to be from a Canadian cookbook similar to the US Pillsbury, king Arthur etc. Do any of you have any opinions about this cookbook or the recipes?

No opinion yet as I have not tried them but I would love to have the sugar cookie recipe!

Here is what I found:

1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg yolk
3 tablespoons milk
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Combine dry ingredients in a medium bowl. In a mixer, cream the butter and sugar until well-blended. Add in the egg yolk and mix well. Fold in dry ingredients and blend on slow speed of mixer, adding in vanilla and milk as dough forms.

Wrap dough in plastic and chill until firm

Preheat the oven to 375 F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to a thickness of 1/4 inch. Cut into desired shapes and place on baking sheet.

Bake until just golden around the edges, 8-12 minutes.

I haven't made these cookies, but I have a 5 Roses cookbook from the 60's ... it's a classic! I've never had any problems with any of the recipes I have used from it.

Five Roses Flour was my mother's favourite for making pies. I have never liked the consistency of it because it is a bit gritty, haha, one thing we disagreed on but then I make cakes and cookies and Mom just liked making pies. It does however have an excellent reputation!
It is one of our top flours flours, with Robin Hood and Monarch and Purity being other Canuck makes.
And I do have some older Five Roses cookbooks and recipes and I see a lot of new releases of their older books and some brand new ones too. So I would give their recipes a thumbs up!

Yup, I'm a Five Roses girl as well. My mom has a french version of the cookbook, also from the '60's, that we use to this day. Recipes always turn out too!
