I was at Costco as few days ago and they had three different sized hat boxes that sat on top of each other and were adorned to look like a snowman....my first thought was that same concept would make a terrific cake! Just a thought!

Thank you MrsMissey thats kind of the thought I also had so I guess thats the idea I will go with, do you think I should shave the rims of the tops to give them a more rounded shape? Or do you have any ideas to make them look round?

Thanks again

This is the snowman cake I made last year ... stack it on top of progressively lighter blue cakes and decorate them with snowflakes...?

If you have the Wilton Course 3 book there is a very cute snowman cake that sounds like what you're looking for. It is four different size round cakes stacked. The bottom three (biggest to small) make the snowman and the top (smallest) makes his hat. If you don't have the book you could probably find it at your local Michael's or Hobby Lobby.

MelC your cake is wonderful!

I've seen cakes that actually look like what MrsMissey mentioned and they are cute! Here's another 3D snowman idea with instructions...

Thanks everyone! I found the idea for this one in one of the cake mags last X-mas (Cake, or Sugarcraft or something) and it turned out really well.

The snow was just a smear of royal icing with a sprinkle of Wilton's white cake sparkles!

I wanted to try a 3D snowman as well. I just bought the sports ball pan and was thinking of using that with the 3D bear pan (and maybe a little extra carving). I'm still in the planning stage, not quite sure how or if this will work.

My SIL wants a 3-d snowman cake for her birthday in January. I was going to use the 3-d sports ball pan for the bottom layer. The top layer would be the same pan but I'd shave off some to make it smaller than the bottom. I would definitly use a couple supports.

Top it off with a fondant hat, scarf, broom, and face.

I just made a golf ball a couple weeks ago with the pan and covered it with fondant. I could easily pick up the ball and handle it which was nice. If you're stacking it later on site you would almost have to use fondant so it wouldn't get all smudgy unless you had a pretty forgiving texture in the buttercream.

Ok here is the problem everyone I have ever did fondant for hated it, and I am trying to feed like 150 people and all I can think of is doing the round cakes and shaving it off to make it look kind of round and yes I was going to stack on site because the hall is 1 hour away. I really wanted to do the buttercream, OH I just dont know what to do!!!!!!!!!!!

You can still use buttercream, cakebybek, just use the ole' Viva papertowel trick on it to get it smooth, that is how I smooth all of my sports ball cakes. And you could probably transport it assembled if you put a dowel down through all 3 or 2 parts of the snowman's body - shouldn't move. Maybe if you add some buttercream to the board before putting the bottom of the snowman on and then make sure your dowel pierces into the cake board.

You could also bake your cake in a big bowl for the bottom part of the snowman and use the sports ball pan for the top. Wouldn't matter that the bottom part is flat on the bottom - more stable that way.

I did a snowman cake and i used buttercream for icing and I used two different sized sportsball pans and the head I had to carve smaller. After applying the frosting I sprinkled the entire snowman with coconut. Looked as if he were made of snow. i adorned him with a carrot fondant nose, hat and scarf and made his mouth and eyes with buttercream (that started to slide off because of the coconut, but waseasily fixed). A must is a long dowel in the center or he may topple over! icon_lol.gif

You could texturize the buttercream to look like a cake candle. What snowman is smooth anyway icon_wink.gif

The sports ball pan takes a little less than one cake mix.

If you need more cake you could do mini cakes and decorate them like round snowman faces.

Another idea entirely: You could decorate with fondant using a dummy cake made of styrofoam balls. Then you could make individual cakes or one big cake to feed everyone.

Would a winter scene cake with a snowman topper work? Seems like your biggest problem is coming up with something that will be big enough to serve everyone. I saw a really cute picture in the 1988 Wilton yearbook. If you're interested, pm me and I can send you a picture of the picture.
