Hi,
I made this huge seven tier wedding cake... rich fruit rum cake with marzipan and home-made fondant.
The color scheme was red, white and black. I worked long and hard on this one and it looked so beautiful.. broderie anglaise lace on each tier, with blood red roses and black satin ribbon trim.
The tiers were set on a cast iron stand , the cakes spiralled around a central pillar. We had little candles on the cast-iron part that ran around the outside of the cakes. It looked absolutely gorgeous!
Unfortunately, one of the candles got too close to the broderie anglaise , and to my mortification, the icing caught fire.
My husband quickly put out the fire but in the process, burned his hand pretty badly.
Never again! No more candles! My poor husband!

Your poor husband! He was trying to save your cake. That's so sweet of him. I would have been mortified too!
oh my!! was this AT the reception or before the delivery??? it sounds beautiful.. dont suppose you were able to take any pic's???
i hope your hubby is doing better... who knew cakes could be so dangerous?? =0)
What a great husband.....risking personal injury to save your work....I hope he is alright!
OMG...what a nightmare. Sorry to hear what happened and hope your DH is doing better..bless his heart!!
This was a few years ago... I just remembered it while going through the Disasters Forum, and HAD to post!
Unfortunately, this happened at the reception, just as the bride and groom were ready and waiting to cut the cake.
My husband had some huge blisters, poor guy, but he recovered quickly.
Thanks for caring,
Karen
wow!! that is a true disaster. Think of it this way; it's a wedding cake no one will ever forget!!!
Luckily, my husband was close to the cake, and noticed it at once...
He put out the fire and then I just broke off 2 four inch peces of the broderie anglaise lace icing, which were just too close to the candles, and the rest of the cake was fine. It looked great, albeit missing a couple of pieces!

Wow! That would have been aweful.... and your poor husband. Yes..... I don't think anyone will ever forget that wedding cake. Sounds beautiful!
