I have cold and am vegging out today. The baby also has a little cold so we both nice and groggy. I was just wondering for those of you who depend on your baking income, what do you do when you get sick? A nasty cold and decorating a cake just wouldn't go well together. How do you explain that you can't fill someone's birthday or wedding cake order?
I have had this happen to me one time. I actually had to be admitted in the hospital. I had to call the clients and let them know. Fortunately...I did not have to do this for a wedding cake. However, one cake was for my daughter's b-day party and she was most disappionted. I have a good friend that also does cakes and have recomended her when I was unable to do it.
Hey Bubblez~
Me, me, meeee!! I bake when I'm sick. I have to wear a mask all the time because I'm allergic to the powders from powdered sugar, coco powder, & flour. If is has a puff affect after you add it to your batter or icing I'm allergic too it. So far I've never cancelled orders . I just bake away taking lots of breaks. I hope you & your baby feel better soon. I know this is the 1st Thanksgiving that me & my family have been healthy for in a few years! I'll get to enjoy the food this year!!! Ya!!!
GET WELL SOON!!
My mom was sick on my 4th birthday and didn't make my cake. My dad bought a beautiful cake and my siblings added lollips to it for more decoration. I cried and pouted the entire day. My poor mother!
Turtle, you poor thing! I have allergies, but would never bake if baking ingredients bothered me. I'm a wimp. See above story.
I alway heard that moms can't get sick. Wait a minute, it was a my kids and husband telling me that!!! I'm sick right now along with my 10 year old. No cakes this weekend.
I haven't actually sold a cake because I am still learning, but I would not bake a cake and decorate one I was selling if I was sick. I just don't think that's a professional thing to do only because you might be spreading germs. When they come to your house and pick up the cake and your sick, your nose is all red, your coughing and sniffling. I guess it would depend on the person, what would you think? I know there are people that go to work sick....I don't agree with that either because then they make everyone around them sick but that's just me and my opinion.
On the rare occasion that I do get sick( great..now I've jinxed myself ) my Dad makes the cakes and cheesecakes. He's the one that actually started me on baking. He doesn't do the decorating though...he said he doesn't have enough patience. This year we are sharing the holiday orders that are coming in...it makes it nice to have someone that can help.
Are you kiddin...Mommy's gettin sick!!! Not Allowed!!
I bake even when I am sick if a cake is due.Unless I am in the hospital......I've never been that bad though....knock on wood!!
I have made cakes while suffering through a cold. I wear a dust mask (just in case of sneezes and coughs) and gloves. Also I have sanitizer gel pump bottles every where and, especially when sick, contantly santize my hands so as not to spread any germs around. I'll also use only disposal items as much as possible when anyone in my house has any kind of bug. (I know, a little compulsive, but it is more for my physician husband than for me, I believe in lots of hot soapy water! Still it is better to be safe than sorry about sanitation and food handling). I've never had anyone complain about getting sick from my cakes when I have a cold.

OH how lucky you are! I am so envious, My Dad taught me to bake also,
He used to make all our birthday cakes. He's been gone along time now.
Idid try to teach my step dad but he just likes to add salt to everything and pretend he's cooking or baking ( the kids get a kick out of him)
unfortunately He too will be going home soon (4th stage cancer)
I wish you and your Dad many, many, many more holidays to share
treasure them all.
That is so sweet that your dad's taught you how to bake.
I don't think germ transmission is a big worry. I don't think anyone would sneeze on the cake. I lose my appetite as soon as I get sick and just can't see myself baking and decorating a cake.
Maxiecakes: Thank you ..you are very sweet. I'm sorry to hear about your Dad and Stepdad...its nice that you have the memories of baking with your Dad. Believe me, I treasure these moments. I love the fact that we have something like this in common. He's the one that taught me not to follow recipes: When someone asks him how much he puts in he says "Oh a handful of this and a handful of that" - this makes me laugh because I always tell him his hands are like paws - they're huge
Well it depends on who the cake is for. If it's a paid cake for a wedding, I'll do it (contracts are involved), but I'll make really sure my hands stay sanitized and wear a mask. My reputation depends on getting that cake out. I wouldn't want to risk it. Now, if it's a favor I'm doing for a friend or coworker, they can forget about it.
ge978, Thank you for your kind thoughts, My Dad was a cook in the Army so he moved really fast and had a habit of making waaaaayyy to much of everything! He was so funny! Thank you for letting me share a few little memories of him.
No choice. Weddings must go on. Two weeks go I had a few orders and had a cold. My hands were red & raw when I delivered from all the washing. But the cakes were gorgeous.
Maxiecakes: I'm glad you did share...your story about your stepdad and the salt still makes me giggle when I think about it.
I had a good friend and fellow cake decorator who served as a back=up years ago. Then she had a baby and lost interest. Right now I have no back-up and it is a concern. So far, I haven't been really sick...knock on wood.
