Okay, here is the story and then my question.

I received an order for a cake on Monday and it was due for Wednesday. I get the cake ready around noon and give the client a call. I get the machine so I leave a message. I call two more times that same day. Today I try again with the same results.

My question is this. How long should I wait before I either donate the cake or let my family dig in? I am thinking that tomorrow is the last day the cake will be fresh. What do you all think?

If she doesn't call you back tonight, I say dig in! Your business agreement was for yesterday. I definitely wouldn't donate it to her - unless she ordered it for a charitable event (school, church, community bake sale), in that case I would go directly to the organization and donate the cake directly. Hope this helps!

That's such a bummer! I've haven't had that happen to me (yet) but I think if you haven't heard from the customer by tonight, dig in!

You've done your best to contact the customer and it would be a waste to let it go bad.

I hope you it wasn't a cake that you spent very many hours on!

Thanks, It was a guitar cake and it was my first one. I only charged her $15.00. After I finished I realized the cake is definetly worth more. It took about half a day to decorate. I feel pretty good about the cake, I only wish I could smooth out frosting better. Even with a paper towel it still needs work on the sides. It's not quite as good as sarahscakes, but looks very similar.

As for donating, I am thinking my son's class at school or maybe the teachers. They work so hard. We get tonz of practice cakes here, it is becoming an addiction. Plus, if I donate it, I save on calories.

Sorry this happened to you. It's happened to me before, it took me a while to learn but now I ALWAYS get a deposit. I don't even think about starting a cake until I've got some money in my hands, no matter how 'sure' I am that they'll hold to their word.

I guess you have to get screwed a few times to learn that lesson! Remeber: time is money (I don't care how experienced - or inexperienced - you are) so get a deposit!

My polilcy is PREPAY for everything. That way if they have paid for the cake they will be more apt to pick it up and I haven't lost any money on it. So far no one has balked at prepaying.
Good luck! Send it to school, the kids and teachers will appreciate it!!

on second thought, i would donate it to the teachers instead of eating it yourself.....it would be free advertisment...who knows you may get lots of orders from it.
make sure they know who made it and how they can contact you.

That is a bummer but sometimes people change their minds and are not nice enough to make a phone call. I try to touch base with people to confirm orders so I know that they still want it. I agree...take a picture and give it away to someone else. If you have the client's email...I would go ahead and send it to her. icon_smile.gif

Well, do I feel like a heel. I just received a call from the lady and she had to take her father to the heart doctor in Lubbock, TX. He was admitted to the hospital and she has been there with him all week. She called my MIL to get my number so she could let me know what was going on. She is going to get the cake tomorrow.

I am so glad I didn't dig in right away like I wanted. I did however, run into my son's teacher tonight and offer to bring it to class tomorrow. Now, I am going to make another cake to take to school tomorrow, although not as detailed.

Ohhh, the work I get myself into. (Good thing I love doing this.)

I am glad you heard back from her and that there was certainly a good reason for what happened (sorry about her dad though!)

I am glad that you heard from her and feel terrible about her dad. That is completely understandable why she was unable to call sooner. Unfortunately...sometimes we jump to the wrong conclusion.
