There was a topic a few weeks back regarding "Dream Kitchens". Well, do I have some news...we are building a new house!!! I get to design my kitchen.

My question is this...what are the advantages of having just one large, deep sink as opposed to having a double sink? Or vice versa. I am going to have a dishwasher. I only wish I could squeeze two dishwashers in there.

Hey!

I myself like to have 2 sinks. I wouldn't want one sink. I like to soak things before washing them. So I usually fill up both sinks w/ water & soap.

Good luck on your new kitchen!! Sounds wonderful!!

I like my deep double bowl sink. I like that i can toss dirty dishes on the one side when I'm cooking/baking and use the other side still for vegetables, fruits, rinsing. It is one of the deep sinks which is definitely something I'll always look for. This is one of the few places a few extra inches are welcome. icon_wink.gif

I forgot to add that most of the people I know with a single bowl sink have a plastic bowl in the sink for washing! So in theory they made their own double bowl sink!

Congratulations! I was lucky enough to build my dream home, and dream kitchen 6 years ago, so I know how exciting it is. I went with a deep, double stainless steel sink and I wouldn't change a thing. It holds my biggest pots and pans and is easy to clean because it dosen't stain.

I have a double bowl sink now. And the one thing I abslolutely HATE about it is that my really big pans and pots/skillets don't fit in it, so it's a pain to wash them.

Congrats on the new house! THat's so exciting!!

I did a complete reconstruction of my kitchen 2 years ago. I have an extra deep double sink. The only way to go I think. The only thing I do regret is that I got a ceramic Hunter Green sink to match the trim in my kitchen - looks great but I'm not happy with how it's holding up. I have to be EXTRA careful with everything as it scratches easily. Definately wouldn't do that again. Go with the stainless steel double deep. thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

I justa redid my kitchen 2 yrs ago. Went with the deep double sink it also has on one side a lip in it so I can put a frying pan in there flat the handle fits in the extra lip. It is so nice I went with the stainless steel. Also got the faucet that is tall. I can fit large pots in there and still have room.

Hi prettycakes!

I'm the one who started that "Dream Kitchen" thread....& I'm still dreaming...can't make up my mind on soooo many things!! lol icon_rolleyes.gif However - I have decided on my sink.....single bowl, extra deep/wide stainless steel w/apron front. Personally, I can't stand double bowl sinks. For me, it's just wasted space. I don't wash dishes by had, except on occasion, so two bowls is just not necessary. In my kitchen I'm planning now (for the new house) I'm planning on having an extra sink in the island, and not just a tiny one for washing veggies, a decent size so I can put something there to soak if necessary. Plus, I'm also putting a large utility room w/ big work sink in it right behind my kitchen, so anything that's extra dirty/ugly & needs to soak for a long time can go in there. And if you're going to have a dishwasher, why not get a GREAT one that does the work for ya?? Otherwise, what's the point, I say!!?? In this day & age there is no reason we should have to wash our dishes twice...the new dishwashers are so wonderful! Both my stepmom & MIL have new ones that are all stainless inside & super powerful....they come clean, even if you don't rinse the dishes before putting them in!! If something is really, really baked on it might not come off...but then all you have to do is soak/scrub that spot, not the whole dish.

One thing I would warn against....ANY WHITE SINK!!! lol My MIL has a really nice/expensive cast iron/porcelain coated white sink....while beautiful, it chips easily, scratches easily & stains in the blink of an eye!! Plus she got shiny brass fixtures for it....but they stay dull looking unless she wipes them down after every use, & they show water spots horribly. Both the sink & fixtures are a ton of work to keep it looking clean, but it still looks worn out even then. That's why I'm a proponent of stainless steel....all it takes to keep it looking good is an occasional scrub down with an SOS pad, then I wipe it down with a tad of vinegar...on my old one I have now, I apply a couple of drops of olive oil to it and then buff it ...it shines like a brand new sink and sometimes lasts a week or more!

Sorry so long... icon_redface.gif Can you tell I LOOOOVE talking about kitchen equipment???? lol I have kitchen planning on the brain!! PM me & let's talk about our new houses/kitchens!! It'll be fun to have someone to share ideas with! thumbs_up.gificon_biggrin.gif

If I could have any sink I wanted it would be an extra deep, divided sink, that attached underneath the counter top, so that you never get the gunk build-up under the rim of the sink!

Congrats on the new house!!!

We just remodeled our kitchen this year and I ended up going with a large deep sink and a smaller prep sink right next to it...I LOVE IT!! the large side is big enough so pots, pans and cookie sheet can lay inside of the sink.. I considered having one large sink, but if you have stuff soaking you don't have anywhere to wash your hands or put stuff in the disposal...That was a big factor for me, so I compromised. We got Corian countertops with an integrated Corian sink..I also had them make the sink 1" deeper. I love, love, love, love my counters and sink!!! thumbs_up.gif

we went with corian counter tops and got the double intergrated sink. I just love it. it cleans really easy and i have even gotten food coloring off of it with out a hassle. This sink is alot deeper then the stainless sink i had before. I really liked the stainless steel sink we used to have, it still looked great when we took it out, and it was 40 years old.

Congrats!

I vote 2 sinks unless you're going to have them put a smaller handwashing sink on the kitchen island. Two sinks allows you to use one for dirty dishes. 2 sinks also allows you to use one sink for washing and one sink for sanitizing.

Wow!!! You all have given me sooo much to think about. I really like the idea of a prep sink. The idea was floating in the back of my mine, but after reading all of this it is right in front. Thank you for your input.

I, like BJ, have a hunter green cast iron/porcelain enamel divided sink with one side deeper than the other. While I love the color and the deep sink, the sink looks like cr@p... all scratched and i keep a Rubbermaid mat-thingy in the bottom! I'd definitely do a divided, deep stainless next time!

What I couldn't understand is why they cannot make double sinks where each sink is as big as a single sink. I looked and looked and looked to no avail. I have the large sink with the small one beside it and the small one is useless. If you try to run water over anything in there, it goes all over, yuck, can't tell you how many times I got my feet wet.
I grew up in an old Victorian house that had a huge white sink, close in size to a small bathtub. You could fit anything you wanted to wash in there, including oven racks, fridge bins, small children. What a treat it would be to have one of those again. I suppose the closest thing to these would be a commercial dishwashing sink.
Well, maybe one day kitchen designers will get the sinks right.
Hugs Squirrelly

Yes, we upgraded earlier this year, and I got a European style sink - stainless steel, double sink with integrated s/s drainer. Have to have two sinks!

I have a double sink, and I love it, but don't miss out on the 2 MOST important features a sink should have and work well:

a SUPER powerful shower sprayer thing (what is it called?) to get all your icing out of the nooks and crannies of your tips

a SUPER powerful garbage disposal

The last sink I had was a lovely double sink as well, but the shower sprayer thing was really weak and it drove me bonkers. Make sure you ask your salesperson how powerful those 2 features are and you will be a happy baker!
