Hello all, I am new to this site and it is incredibly addicting as everyone says! I am afraid I am going to get in trouble at work!
But my question, and I apologize if there is a post about this already, is when selling cakes is it okay to use a cake mix?
I am thinking about trying to sell cakes and I have yet to begin getting a license yet because I want to be somewhat organized before doing anything like that. I kind of assumed that if I try to sell a cake, it would have to be homemade but I see a lot of great feedback about cake mix recipes. I personally like cake mixes and when I made a cake from scratch this past weekend, it got mixed reviews.
Just wondering if anyone can offer some advice.
Thanks!
I sell from scratch and boxed. They both will sell. Most people around here grew up on boxed so that is what they prefer, I do dr. the mix's though. I prefer scratch myself and so do certain people. it just depends on what they want and what you want to do.
Welcome to cake central. There are many threads with discussion about scratch vs mix. It is a matter of personal preference.
You also need to consider the licensing rules in your area. Some states have requirements for ingredient lists.
I use cake mixes. I do doctor up the carrot cake and use different fillings, but I find since I bake everything within a day or two of the order the mix cakes are extremely fresh. I get alot of compliments on how moist they are. I decided long ago that if I wanted to make alot of cakes, I would need to be more efficient. Having to measure everything out takes time and the box mixes are "all in one". My favorite is DH, then BC. My frosting is from scratch though! I do use the slogan, "baked fresh, with that homemade taste!"
