I have a request for a cake for 2 people who died 9-11.
She wants a sheet cake with the towers on top. Any suggestions?

Tough one--I'll have to ponder on that one a while.

Could you maybe cut them out of fondant or chocolate to stand up and then wrap a fondant flag around the base or something like that? Maybe a small plaque that says "We will always rember" or something?

Good luck

I like the idea of chocolate towers standing up from the sheet cake. And the idea of a plaque is very nice, too.

depending on the size of the cake, what about an edible image of the sky line with the towers then a flag drapped on the other side

How about for the towers you use cake made into squares that you stack, then cover with buttercream and fondant. Maybe place dowels in middle to keep it stable. With a plaque with writing (ex. in remberence of) or whatever they wanted written on it.

Kristy

hope this helps.

What if you did a BCT of the towers with 2 angels hovering over/above them? It is a hard one...

I was just going to go look for the cake that MommyEdzards posted. She beat me to it. I am wondering though if a cake with some angels and flowers and ribbons and such might be a better idea - however you do it it will probably make people cry. I still get all choked up when I think of the bombing here in OKC. If I were to make a cake remembering the Murrah Federal Building here I would maybe make a sketch of the memorial tree and make some teddy bears and angels and such to decorate with - kind of like the fence that surrounded it where people hung pictures and stuffed animals and flowers in rememberance of the children and families. Anyway, just some ideas - getting all choked up now . . .

If she wants the twin towers to be standing off the cake, then the loaf would seem like your best idea, but I have to admit I like the picture of the towers better. One thing I thought of was that in order to cut the towers cake, you have to lay it down. Might be a bit tacky, unless it is taken to the kitchen for cutting.

Good luck!

What about the towers made out of rectangular decorated cookies sticking up out of the cake? Perhaps you could decorate front and back. You could have other decorated cookies to resemble other buildings in the New York sky line. Unless she specifically wants a memorial aspect to the cake, I'd minimize that and let the buildings speak for themselves. That way, people can remember how it was. It will be nostalgic anyway, but maybe not so sad.

I admit I've never done cookies like that, but I might try for this. I have done a rectangle where I've cut out shapes from fondant and applied them to the top of a cake like layers of applique. (Don't have pictures to post yet, but could possibly find something to e-mail to you if you PM me) If it doens't have to be 3D, you could do the skyline of New York flat on the cake.

Good Luck! I'll look forward to the pictures.

Would it be possible to make something else in remembrance? I ask because when I went to ground zero, we saw the twisted pieces of iron ( think metal rope) that formed a cross on top of all the rubble. There were Fire fighter and police officer badges and all of those items spoke volumes. Perhaps something like that might work. The towers themselves would be difficult to do justice to. I wish you luck with it. I'm sure you will do wonderful on this job.
