Ok guys...it's finally done...whew!
Remember all those recipe, buttercream, ganache, edible images, and piping gel questions I had recently? Well, they were all for this cake.....
It was made for a name-day party (A Greek custom)...for a man who just re-did his "basement" (it's nicer than most houses) in an authentic 1950's theme. I mean he went all out with a jukebox, a coke dispensing machine, a real 50's cash register on the bar, etc.....
So, everything is fondant...I used my new love, edible images to make some of the pieces and I handpainted some of them. The man's first car in the US was a baby blue Thunderbird with the license plate "GREECE 1", hence the car...and if you look closely for the "I Love Lucy" heart....it actually says "I love Sophie" (his wife). It was a lot of fun and I hope to get some more orders through their friends....
I must, however, give credit where credit is due....although the images are mine, the cake design comes from another designer. I had saved the picture in my private file because I loved it....I cannot find the website now but I will and then I will post it.....the cakes there are all in this similar style....if anyone knows, please let me know....thanks again!!!!
This cake is very nice. Neatly done and thoughtfully designed. The recipients had to be ecstatic!

The style reminds me a little of Sharon's at Sharon's Sugar Shack. Could that be where you saw your inspiration cake? I don't remember seeing a cake exactly like that though. Really amazing!

What a great cake. Congratulations! That had to be hours and hours of planning and work, but well worth it. I'm just a beginner, but can't imagine that I'll ever be at that level. I can on wish!

That is too awesome! Now, adven68, I am going to have to try one of those cakes.
Adven68,
Your cake is amazing....You are so talented...Can you tell a little more about how you did this? Did you make mini edible images and attach to fondant?

Actually, some of it was done this way...I don't know if you can see the Bazooka gum and the Tootsie Rolls on the wires (my good digital is being repaired) but I loaded a whole sheet of the edible stuff with these images and then I cut them out and put them on fondant. I embellished everything with some painted on details, piping gel (I never used this before...it is awesome!) and some dusts which I can't live without.
Some of the larger figures were also images (the coke logo, the I love Lucy) Elvis and Marilyn were from the computer but I hand-painted their faces and embellished them for a better effect. I used a tiny brush and it makes the images really POP. They no longer look like fuzzy, dot-matrix-like paper copies. I have to tell you this cake was such a learning experience. Things got easier as I went along and the next time I do a cake like this it will probably take me 1/2 the time.
Thanks for all your support and help!
Oh I love it! I will bet that everyone of us are just looking for an occasion to do a cake like that now! What do you have it sitting on? It kind of looks like a hub cap which would be SO fitting for that cake!
One more question for you...the checker board pattern on the cake---do you make that first and thend put it on the cake or do you put each square on the cake individually???
