Hello everyone,

I am new to CC. I've been browsing for sometime now, not really having enough guts to really post anything interesting. The time has come.....
Well last night during my Wilton Course I class, I was being taught the Wilton way to make roses. I had taken a beginners class before some where else and I learned roses. There I had 2 instructors, both were teaching the same lesson, but they each decorated differently. One decorated towards herself the other away from herself. What ever way you liked best, was fine with them. As long as you were comfortable. I tried both and I like both. BUT when it came to roses. I decorate away from myself. Okay back to last nights class. I was showing my Wilton instructor how I do roses. (away from myself) and she goes "Oh, you're doing it wrong." Wilton doesn't do it that way. I thought to myself, Huh, its the way I feel comfortable, right?
So thats my question, is there a right away? My drive home I couldn't get it off my mind. I'm I decorating wrong? What do you guys think?

Please don't get me wrong I'm going to take all of the Wilton classes. I love decorating! Just second guessing myself now......

Thank you for listening and sorry so long......

The Wilton instructors are required to teach the "Wilton method" - they aren't supposed to deviate, or even mention any brand name other than Wilton.

As long as the results are good, do it however you want. I've always felt a class like that is to teach you enough to get you started, then you can perfect/change/adapt as you wish. Decorating is an art, not an exact science.

I'd be interested to know if your instructor is just following the rules of the Wilton way, if he/she is not very comfortable with decorating (and that everyone has a different style), or if he/she thought the results were really inferior to a rose done the Wilton way.

icon_smile.gif I would not worry about.. when you're in class, do what she says, but later when your done w/ class..do what is comforatble for you icon_smile.gifthumbs_up.gif ..
as long as you get the results you want.

Wow that something, My Wilton instructor showed us THE WILTON WAY and then HER WAY. She did not care how we did it as long as "THE RESULTS WERE GOOD" We all did things the way we were comfortable. All she cared about was that the end result was good. How we got there was another story.

the only problem with making a rose in the direction you are, will be when you get to course 2 and you try the victorian rose, the curve of the petals won't be right. Now in all honesty, you really aren't decorating wrong you are just most likely a righty, making a left handed rose. Many lefties could learn alot following your lead

I"m sorry that she made you doubt yourself. She was NOT supposed to say you were "doing it wrong"...SHE WAS TEACHING YOU WRONG!

What she was supposed to do was to "gently" SELL you the WILTON way of doing roses so that you could use "OTHER" tips..lol

What she could've done, instead of saying you're doing it wrong and making you feel bad, was to remind everyone that there are MANY ways of doing things and even to decorate a cake...but that "TONIGHT" she was going to show the class how to do "THE WILTON ROSE"...

That's it in a nutshell...maybe she hasn't gone to any of the workshops yet??

(what a HORRIBLE thing to do to a student...even if it was doing it unaware!)

My Wilton teacher told me I was doing it wrong too. I told her real quick that as long as it comes out looking like a rose that there is no right or wrong way to make a rose. Since the courses I had a Day of Sharing at my house. Ntertayneme came & she showed us how to do the rose on a dowel or lollipop stick. I will never do a Wilton rose again. Ntertayneme has a tutorial on CC that you might benefit from. It's very easy & you don't have to mess w/ the flower nail. Dowel roses are so much lighter too! You can add them right on your cake or let them harden either way they are prettier!

I just learned to do everything my way. It's not like they will fail you or anything~ LOL~ Good Luck!!

I guess what she should have said to you is that by rotating the nail that way you are working blindly. She should have then proceeded to show you the difference between rotating clockwise and counterclockwise.

Exactly the reason I was told to NOT learn the Wilton way!!!

Do whatever is comfy for you. You'll get the same results so to heck with the Wilton way!

As others said she is suppose to be teaching the Wilton way. I also agree that she may not have handled it in the best way.

As an instructor, I start off on the first night of Course 1 telling my students that there are many different ways to do things, and that it isn't always right or wrong. I do go on to tell them that they are taking a Wilton Class and that in class we show them the Wilton way.

If I have a student that is doing something that works for them, I won't correct them. But if I do have a student that is struggling I will watch to see what they are doing, and what can help make it easier for them.

If you have a different way that works for you, but all means do what works best. She won't be at home with you when you are decorating.

Also, you may want to consider letting her know how you feel. She may very well not understand that her tone was upsetting. I'm not saying you have to have a direct comfortation, but you can always write her a note telling her how what she said made you feel.

Good luck with your the class and your roses! icon_smile.gif
