So I called to confirm w/ the manager of Baskin Robbins our "interview". This is how it went:

"Baskin Robbins. . ."

"Hello, Ah-mee?"

"You want to talk to Amy?"

"Oh. . no, I want to talk w/ Ah-mee."

"She's busy w/ a customer right now. . ."

"I want to talk w/ you. . .it's Nick ***----*** calling about the job we'd previously talked about?"

"Call back in ten minutes, she's busy w/ a customer."

"No, I want to talk w/ the manager. . ."

"She in charge is busy right now, call back in ten minutes, okay?"

". . .*GIVING UP* alright, bye. . ."

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

That was a horrible third impression impression. . . icon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

Should I still go in? She'll know it was me who'd called and she's going to think I'm a freak. . . icon_cry.gif

Nick I do wish you luck and if this is the job you want than good for you. But, if you don't get it don't be too discouraged. I have watched one of their decorators work and chatted with her, and even applied there myself many years ago. It is production work, fast paced and limited in self expression. You really can't be very creative. Kind of like how Wilton limits what their instructors can teach. B&R limits their decorators to what designs they may and may not use.

Well, you are not out of the running yet. Call tomorrow and see if she can see you then or whatever day is good. I think this would be good experience, if it the decorating is mundane. You will still gain skills in cake decorating and it seems to be something that you enjoy.

My first job was at Taco Bell, so not glamorous!!

Cindy

P.S. Won't tell you how many years ago that was, but suffice to say your parents were probably still in grade school!!!

Nick,
keep going!!! keep trying!! If you don't, you won't know if you would have gotten the job or not?! thumbs_up.gif
And if you don't get it, maybe it just wasn't meant to be right now!

Oh, and when I was growing up, there were no Taco Bells icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Nick,

I think it is very admirable that you are so interested in going to work at a young age. I can tell you, it really is a character builder and you will learn alot working in the public sector.

The work ethic in the country has really gone down the tubes, so it is nice to see someone who really wants a job. I've been working at the same profession for 27 years and the new hires spend more time getting out of work than it would take to just sit down and do their job.

Good luck and hold your head up. Be confident when you go in for your interview. I believe you have the skills needed to to that job. And yes, make a cake and decorate it this week. It will be a good example to show the manager.

Nick,

Good luck with the interview...I know it's disappointing to feel the way you do, when you really DO want to work.

I have to second what Shirley said. Even though the job is production, and narrow creatively speaking, you WILL hone your decorating skills, your precision and speed. It will be a great experience for you.

Then down the road, when Ron Ben-Israel calls, and wants you to work for him in his shop, you'll be SO ready for it!

Go get 'em! We're all cheering for you! icon_biggrin.gif

Nick do you live near the B&R...maybe you should just go in after school instead of calling? If you go again & she's not there leave a note w/ your number telling her you dropped by.

Nick,
Good luck with your endeavor on getting the job with B&R. I agree with everyone else I think you should keep trying. Persistence shows that you are truly interested in getting the job. I wish my kids were as interested in getting a job as you, they just want to sit at home and watch TV or play video games. Kuddos to you for wanting to get out into the work force and hone your skills.

My first job when I was 15 was at Baskin Robbins!!!!! I loved it -I got to work with my best friend and had a lot of fun! This was my pre-cake baking days and I always wanted to do the cakes - I loved watching our cake maker in action!! But they did let me write on them for customers!!! lol

Good luck!! Don't give up!

I don't know if I'm just not reading it right, but sounds like maybe another employee answered with 'bad english' is it possible? It wasn't the manager but another employee saying that she wasn't available and then that he wasn't.... On another note, I know what you mean you don't want to be pushy, but then people say that's what you have to do to get a job....just makes you wonder when does it go from 'keep me in mind, hire me" to just plain annoying, I'm not sure...maybe there's a website that could explain it

Thanks for the replies guys. I appreciate the support. thumbs_up.gif No, the BR is about 8 minutes on freeway from where I live. That's what I hate- that I can never get the manager and that the employees are never helpful. Everytime I call they misinform me or they say she's not available. . .

At this point, I don't know WHO the manager is or if she's even interested in getting another cake person to replace the old one.

Can someone call? icon_rolleyes.gif

These kind of jobs should be approached face to face.

Telephones are an interruption to work that they do not appreciate.

Go in person, prepared, dressed as if for work.

However, no matter how prepared you are, don't be disappointed that you are not accepted, due to your age.

Yes, I've been told that (my age) so many times before but we can never know unless we try, huh? I checked the labor laws and everything is fine, so I guess it's just up to Ami. icon_rolleyes.gif

I kept forgetting ask this, but should I tell them that I am doing this not only for the skill-building it will provide but also to fulfill a requirement to attend a culinary school? She'll have to know sooner or later when filling out the recommendation form. . . icon_redface.gif

yes...tell her....shows initiative on your part...that you, unlike so many teens, actually have a plan for life and working hard to implement it!... Speaks well of you!
