I was trying to make a large cake that is more "dome shaped" than flat and cover it with fondant - kind of like a big hill. Needless to say (notice the "I was trying") I had a cake disaster of MAJOR proportions. The fondant seemed to be too heavy and it ripped from the weight(?).

I haven't given up on it yet, though. I'm going to try again today. Any advice?

thanks in advance!!

First, be careful that you don't roll it too "thin"..there is a greater risk of tearing.

Second, I don't know how you are transferring it to the cake but I find it easiest to put the fondant on a large cake board that has been dusted with cornstarch/powdered sugar and then "shimmy" it onto the cake.

HTH!!

How did you make your dome cake? Sports ball pan? Maybe try a metal mixing bowl (my favorite!).

Yep, don't roll the fondant too thin, better to go a little thick, also the transfering the fondant to the cake can be difficult to handle without your nails ripping in to it so heres a trick for you... go to Wal-Mart or a fabric store and get the thick clear plastic to put over table clothes. All you need of this stuff is about a yard so it's not expensive and roll out your fondant on this plastic dusted with cornstarch/powdered sugar then just roll up the fondant + plastic and then unroll it onto your cake! This has been a life saver for me (plus I also stopped ripping holes in the fondant 'cuz my fingernails were no longer actually touching the stuff!). Hope this helps. thumbs_up.gif

Also, make sure that the cake isn't to weak to hold the weight of the fondant. A very tender type of cake will not work will for fondant but will be great for whipped creams. The denser the cake, the stonger and more weight it will hold.

Have fun and good luck! icon_biggrin.gif

thank you all!

I will try it again with thicker fondant. I rolled it thinner the first time, thinking that that would be better because of the "largeness" and the weight of the fondant piece.

I will also definitely get a piece of vinyl, but that will ahve to wait until this weekend.

I'm off to try again...

Thanks for your help!
