Coffee Frosting

Delicious coffee flavored chocolate frosting. Cream may be substituted for the milk for added richness.

Coffee Frosting


  • 1 teaspoon instant coffee granules
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 5 cups confectioners’ sugar


1 Mix together; instant coffee or leftover coffee, milk, cocoa powder, butter or margarine, vanilla extract, and confectioners’ sugar until of spreading consistency. Makes more than enough to frost a 13×9 inch sheet cake.

Okay I tried this. What type of consistency should it have? I was trying to use it to frost cupcakes and was going to put it into a pastry bag and pipe the traditional swirl on top. I made this and came out with a runny consistency. I added more powdered sugar to try and get it to thicken up but no use. then i tried to add some cream of tartar to see if maybe that would help and it did but definitely not enough to get it to take a shape. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT I DID WRONG AS I AM SEARCHING FOR A COFFEE FROSTING!!
