Maple (or other) Flavor Filling & Icing

I ended up cobbling together elements of different recipes as ingredients I had been expecting to find in the pantry weren’t there. Despite all the fats it isn’t greasy. Just a light, smooth mouthfeel. It’s not quite as sweet as I’d expected, but still pretty sweet. It does crust, and probably should be refrigerated. On my maple cake it tasted like room temperature maple nut ice cream.

Maple (or other) Flavor Filling & Icing


  • 1 c (2 sticks) butter, softened
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2+ T milk, cream, or liquid coffee creamer
  • 2 T vanilla extract
  • 1 T maple extract or other flavor of choice, to taste
  • Pinch salt, especially if using unsalted butter
  • 4+ c (1 pound) powdered confectioner’s sugar


  1. Combine all the ingredients except sugar in a medium to large bowl and beat until smooth and well combined. Begin adding powdered sugar about a cup at a time, continuing to beat each addition until completely combined. Scrape bowl as necessary. Adjust consistency by adding sugar or liquid as desired.

I made this for a maple cake and it made the cake, if you know what I mean. I used Half n Half and it turned out so smooth. Absolutely delicious! I'm going try this recipe with other flavors.
