Mary Kay Icing

This icing recipe is also known as Poor Man’s Frosting and I LOVE this with “Sarah’s Red Velvet Cake TWEAKED,” which can be found here in the recipe section of Cake Central. This is a mildly sweet, non-crusting icing, much like a 7-minute frosting.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3/4 cup white vegetable shortening, such as Crisco
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup butter, softened
  • 2 tsp vanilla

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, add the flour and 1/4 cup of milk and whisk until smooth. Add the remaining milk and whisk until well combined. Cook over medium heat until mixture is thickened. Cool completely.
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream the butter, shortening, and sugar on medium speed for several minutes. Add the vanilla and mix until combined. Add the cooled flour/milk mixture and beat on high for 5 minutes or until smooth and creamy. Spread on cooled cake.
