How to Make a Heart Cake for Your Valentine

Teenagers love Valentine’s Day!  It’s not just about boyfriends and girlfriends.  They want to share the day with their friends and families and sometimes their teachers.  School was really buzzing today with candy, flowers, cards, stuffed animals, cake, cookies,  and balloons.  There was some buzz around my room, too.  Word got out that I was decorating Valentine Cakes for my classes and  you would have thought I was giving away one hundred-dollar bills.   It was only cake and not even one made from scratch!

I have confessed a long time ago that I am not a fan of cake decorating.  I have very little patience with the craft, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t share the love for a beautifully decorated cake.  In fact, I can appreciate it even more knowing what time and effort goes into just one cake.  So here’s a little trick that I picked up from some magazine article or cookbook a hundred years ago and wanted to share it with my students and you.
Yesterday in class I made the cakes from a Duncan Hines Golden Butter Cake mix.  Here’s the low down
  • Needed 2 cake pans the same size  -  One round and one square  ( I prefer 8 inch pans over the 9 inch because it makes a taller and prettier layer)
  • Press wax paper in the bottom of the pan, then cut the paper to fit into the bottom of the cake pan
  • Grease the pans with a small amount of Crisco and shake a tablespoon of flour in the pan.
  • Shake out the excess flour.
  • Follow the directions  on the  box for mixing the cake
  • Bake according to the directions on the box.
  • Run a straight edge around the pan to release the cake
  • Cool the layers in the pans for about 15 minutes.
  • Turn layers on a cooling rack and cool completely.
  • Place the square cake with one corner facing the bottom of the cake plate
  • Cut the round cake in half
  • Place the halves at the top of each side of the square
  • Now you have your heart!
