A delicious, go-to recipe for chocolate frosting is one of those things that every baker should have in their recipe arsenal, and this rich chocolate frosting recipe is second to none. Definitely delicious with Classic Yellow Birthday Cake, this frosting can even be used on chocolate cupcakes for a double dose of chocolate!
½ cup butter, melted
⅔ cup cocoa powder
3 cups confectioners’ sugar
⅓ cup milk
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
MIX butter and cocoa powder on low speed until smooth.
ADD 1½ cups sugar and half of the milk, combine.
ADD vanilla and remaining sugar and milk.
BEAT for 1 minute until fully incorporated. Scrape the bowl as necessary
FROST and fill an 8-inch cake or 24 cupcakes.
How do you get your chocolate icing so dark and yummy looking? Mine is always lighter than that but I want to achieve the darker look...thanks for the help!
To get that luscious dark look, use a really good quality cocoa powder. Cacao Barry is one of the best. It's rich, dark and very chocolaty.
That looks exactly like what I am looking for!
Can this be piped on cupcakes and used to decorate on cake? Sounds Delish!
Thank you - I will try Cacao Barry, I've never heard of it but can't wait to try it!
I use this recipe all the time; however; I whip it for 5 minutes (and I add 1 TBSP of Kahlua if making for adults) so delicious - and yes; you can pipe it on cakes; and it sets up really nice
Hi, I melt my butter in a pot on low, add the cocoa powder then the Skim milk...while still on low I add the powdered sugar-then the vanilla. I stir with a whisk and dip cupcakes or brownies or pour onto a cake...This actually hardens up like a ganache and is very yummy and smooth...discovered purely by accident! A perfect accident my hubby says! Give it a try!
how long does the frosting last, i only add water to mine and i was concerned that this recipe contains milk.
"Perfect Accident" sounds so good :) I wonder if it gives a shiny look as well.
The original recipe looks so good and creamy, a must-try thing.
I made this by halving the recipe for a batch of mini chocolate cupcakes I had baked. It came together very easily and had a wonderful texture. Although I did think that it was somewhat sweet when I taste tested from the bowl but when I tasted a cupcake later on I found that all the ingredients had blended together to create a very wonderful frosting. I will be bookmarking it and using often.
